Manoj Bajpayee Talks International Film Festival of India, ZEE5 Global Title ‘Despatch’

As a seasoned cinephile who’s traversed the labyrinth of international cinema, I can confidently say that “Despatch” is a masterclass in storytelling. Manoj Bajpayee, an actor I’ve long admired for his versatility and depth, delivers yet another powerhouse performance in this gripping drama.

Noted Indian actor Manoj Bajpayee’s new movie titled “Despatch,” helmed by director Kanu Behl, recently premiered at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa. It is scheduled for streaming on ZEE5 Global.

In “Despatch,” actor Bajpayee takes on the role of Joy, a veteran crime editor at a Mumbai newspaper who finds himself in a perilous predicament as he delves into a risky investigation. Amidst his efforts to stay prominent in an era dominated by digital media, Joy is torn between his professional goals and intricate personal affairs, resulting in potentially harmful situations. As he chases a tale involving criminal networks, political deceit, and corporate acquisitions, Joy’s career aspirations clash with his tangled personal life, leading to potentially hazardous outcomes.

Despite its core being a thriller, Behl’s handling of it is captivating,” Bajpayee notes. “What intrigues people is not just the narrative’s deviation from the sequence of events, but rather its exploration of those events happening within the character, delving into their inner human struggles, and especially the depths of their personality, which proves to be more chilling than the actual events unfolding.

Despite the cautions about Kanu Behl’s demanding directorial style, I found myself drawn not only to the compelling script but also to the prospect of working with such a renowned filmmaker. As apprehension about Behl’s reputation as a tough taskmaster grew, my curiosity intensified. The more I heard tales from the set, the more resolute I became in joining this project. I yearned to witness firsthand his directing style, to experience his expertise, and to discover whether his formidable reputation was well-deserved or if it would lead me on a journey that would prove invaluable as an actor and as a person.

In one particularly dramatic sequence, Bajpayee’s character resorted to violence against another actor within a police station setting. After several attempts at filming this scene, the fellow actor started bleeding from his nose. This sight upset Bajpayee so much that he left the set in anger. When Behl approached him in his van later, instead of providing comfort, the director confronted Bajpayee about his statement that it was “just a movie.

Behl said to him, as reported by Bajpayee, ‘It’s not simply a movie we’re creating; we’re crafting an exceptional one.’ This phrase brings out the human side within both you and your acting abilities,” explained Behl.

In his work as a journalist, Bajpayee leveraged his deep-rooted connections within the profession. He shared, “I’ve developed numerous close friendships with investigative journalists based in Delhi and Mumbai over the years. These individuals have provided me with valuable insights into their line of work, helping me appreciate the tension and paradox they navigate on a daily basis.

Making the decision to debut on ZEE5 Global was a strategic move, as Bajpayee recognized the platform’s significant influence in smaller cities (tier two and three) within India, as well as its ability to connect with overseas audiences. “It is the only platform that is popular among the diaspora,” he stated, further explaining that his previous film “Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai” had helped establish an audience for his independent films on ZEE5 Global.
