Mang0 reveals he’s 3 weeks sober after alcoholism got him banned from Smash events

Renowned Super Smash Bros competitor, Joseph ‘Mang0’ Marquez, has given an important update following his dismissal from Cloud9 due to inappropriate conduct under the influence of alcohol at Ludwig’s Beerio Kart gathering.

On the 21st of June, Mang0 was removed from Cloud9, and subsequently faced a temporary ban on Twitch following incidents where he harassed several streamers, among whom was ExtraEmily during Ludwig’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament.

At the Beerio Kart competition, racers needed to drink their beverages prior to completing the race. If they failed to do so, they would face disqualification.

Despite facing criticism from viewers who believed he was endorsing Mang0’s drunken behavior by even using a breathalyzer to celebrate it, Mang0 himself has acknowledged his actions and accepted full accountability.

Approximately a month following the event, Mang0 streamed on Twitch to discuss his strategies for overcoming his addiction and made it clear that he is currently suspended from participating in Smash tournaments for an entire year.

Mang0 reveals steps to overcome alcoholism

On July 21st, Mang0 publicly declared that he was permanently barred from participating in Super Smash Bros. Melee tournaments. However, he requested that his followers refrain from targeting or bothering Smash tournament organizers about this ban.

He expressed his agreement, saying, “It’s acceptable,” and added that he has no objections to the situation. For any Mang0 fans out there, he kindly requests that they refrain from bothering the tournament organizers.

Referring to the Smash pro, often called one of the ‘Five Gods’ in Melee, mentioned that following the incident, he’s had just one bout of intoxication, which occurred approximately four to five days later when the controversy subsided.

In this very seat, I finished off an entire bottle of gin, and I spent hours weeping here, all the way up to 4 AM, as the Falco main confessed.

Regrettably, after being expelled from his organization and losing around 80% of his earnings, Mang0 found the cost of going to rehab prohibitive. Additionally, he visited a few Alcoholics Anonymous meetings but concluded that they didn’t align with his personal experiences or preferences.

To clarify, he’s benefited from the kindness of experts who extended their aid without charge, and he intends to seek therapy as soon as he regains his health insurance coverage.

Marquez also revealed that he’s been doing research and watching videos on his own to help.

He happily announced, “It’s been three weeks since my last drink, and while it might not seem like much, I haven’t had a drop to drink, and I don’t feel the need or desire to do so.

Alcohol has been more like an acquaintance than a friend, but it’s often left me feeling hurt and disappointed. Now, I find myself reluctant to engage with it due to the numerous times it’s caused me harm.

Given that Mang0’s ban expires in a year and he’s focusing on getting his personal life organized, it might not take long before we see him back in the competitive Smash scene, squaring off against Hungrybox once more.
