A man who used to play college football has been accused of fraud after pretending to be NFL players to steal millions of dollars. He reportedly used disguises, including makeup and wigs, to carry out the scheme.
Luther Davis, a former national champion at the University of Alabama, will likely admit guilt to charges of conspiring to commit wire fraud and stealing someone’s identity.
Davis and his accomplice, CJ Evins, worked together to illegally get millions of dollars in loans from several lenders.
The scheme explained
According to court records, Davis and Evins allegedly started their scheme by reaching out to lenders, falsely stating they represented NFL players Michael Penix Jr., Xavier McKinney, and David Njoku.
The athletes are accused of using disguises – wigs, makeup, and head coverings – to pretend to be themselves during video calls with lenders. They allegedly did this to fraudulently obtain loans.
Between May 2023 and October 2024, the two individuals received over $19.8 million through 13 different loans, depositing the money into a shared bank account. Reports indicate they used the funds to purchase real estate, jewelry, and vehicles.
The pair could face up to 20 years in prison.
