Man United fan hasn’t cut his hair for a year because they still can’t win matches

A Manchester United fan has become an internet sensation after promising to grow out his hair until the team achieves five wins in a row.

Frank Ilett, living in Spain, started a challenge in October 2024. Because Manchester United hasn’t won two games in a row since then, his hair keeps getting longer and longer as he waits for them to do so.

Ilett has been sharing his progress on Instagram under the name The United Strand. As the months passed and the growing process became more challenging with the heat, he started using headbands and experimenting with different styles to manage it.

I began a challenge in October to grow my hair until Manchester United won five games consecutively,” he explained to CNN in September. “I initially thought it would be a short-term, lighthearted thing, but it’s definitely lasted much longer than I anticipated!”

Fan’s hair continues to grow

He hasn’t won more than two games in a row recently, and as a result, he hasn’t had a haircut in almost a year. What started as a fun wager has now become a real test of how long he can stick it out and how supportive his fans are.

The fan told CNN he nearly bet on the team to win three games straight, but decided it seemed too obvious.

I was close to achieving three successes in a row, and feeling confident at the time, I decided to aim higher. I thought making it more challenging would keep things interesting for everyone. Now, though, I realize that might have been a bit too ambitious.

He’s also using this as an opportunity to give back. Once his hair grows out enough for a trim, he plans to donate it to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes wigs for children who’ve lost their hair.

Frank is also fundraising during his journey, currently supporting The Little Princess Trust. He’s previously raised hundreds of dollars for Mind UK, a charity dedicated to mental health.
