David S. Goyer, who penned Man of Steel, hasn’t caught James Gunn’s version of Superman as of now, but he’s more than ready to express his thoughts on the upcoming film.
2013 marked the beginning of the DC Extended Universe with Man of Steel, featuring Henry Cavill as the lead superhero. This movie continues to be a point of contention among fans due to several factors such as Jonathan Kent’s self-sacrificing act, Superman’s decision to kill Zod, and Zack Snyder’s portrayal of the character and the film’s overall mood.
Without a direct glimpse of Superman, one can confidently note that James Gunn’s portrayal presents a marked contrast; the cityscape glimmers with vibrancy, giant monsters and other superheroes are in action, while David Corenswet’s interpretation of the character appears to exude a more cheerful demeanor.
Notably, Superman has a flying dog… and it caught the attention of Goyer in the trailers.
Man of Steel writer can’t wait for Superman
Hey there, Josh! On your Happy Sad Confused podcast, I shared my thoughts on James Gunn’s Superman after fans kept asking me for my two cents. I couldn’t help but share my excitement upon seeing the trailers.
Although it might seem more appealing for Snyderverse fans if Goyer disliked it, he shared with the host that he genuinely “enjoyed” the trailers instead.
I haven’t watched the movie as of now… [but] I adore it. It’s nothing like Man of Steel though… since I hail from that realm, it never crossed my mind to incorporate Krypto, but when Krypto makes an appearance, I can’t help but break into a wide smile,” he explained.
During that very interview, Horowitz inquired whether the studios had misunderstood the key takeaway from the triumph of Batman Begins and the broader Dark Knight saga – specifically, the tendency to create more and more dark productions.
Absolutely, you’ve got it! The key takeaway isn’t to follow trends blindly since by the time a film is produced, it might be three or five years later, and the global circumstances could have changed significantly, as Goyer pointed out.
However, it’s common for Hollywood to simplify things in a specific manner… “Now every story will follow the pattern of ‘Batman Begins’. They plan to create something darker, similar to The Dark Knight.
Throughout the process, Snyder has shown great support for Superman, as Zack Snyder himself stated earlier on Threads without making a direct comment.
