According to NTV News, as relayed by GamesIndustry, the suspect was initially apprehended in March 2024 under suspicion of attaching customized components to a second-hand Nintendo Switch’s circuit board and then offering it for sale online at approximately $200 USD.
It seems that the alterations made to this gaming console might have been intended for playing illegitimate video games, a common purpose of console modification. This could potentially be the scenario in question.
In a court ruling on April 14, 2025, Fumihiro Otobe from Ryugasaki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, was given a two-year prison sentence that was suspended for three years, for illegally selling modified Nintendo Switches. Additionally, he was fined approximately $3500 USD.
