Nearly 20 years after Malcolm in the Middle ended, people are still eager for more, and a recent re-release of the show is proving popular with a large audience.
According to Variety, the new Malcolm in the Middle miniseries, Life’s Still Unfair, is a big hit for Hulu. It garnered 8.1 million views globally in its first three days, making it the platform’s most-watched debut of 2026. While Malcolm in the Middle traditionally resonated with American middle-class audiences, the show clearly has international appeal. In Latin America, where it’s available on Disney+, Life’s Still Unfair attracted 3.6 million views, second only to the first season of Loki.
The renewed interest in the show is well-deserved. Although the actor who played Dewey, Erik Per Sullivan, wasn’t able to return, and some supporting cast members have sadly passed away, the revival, Life’s Still Unfair, managed to bring almost everyone from the original show – both cast and creative team – back together. Linwood Boomer, the show’s creator, wrote all four new episodes, and Ken Kwapis, who previously directed 19 episodes of the original and received an Emmy nomination for his work, directed them all.
Though the creators kept the same funny style as the original, it was the returning cast – Bryan Cranston, Frankie Muniz, Jane Kaczmarek, Chris Kennedy Masterson, Justin Berfield, and Emy Coligado – that really brought viewers back to see what Malcolm and his quirky family were doing. The new miniseries promised to recapture the playfully combative relationships that made the original show so funny. The story begins with Malcolm being pulled back into his family’s life when his parents, Hal and Lois, insist he attend their 40th wedding anniversary.
Beyond attracting viewers with familiar shows and movies, revivals like Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair also boost viewership of a streaming platform’s existing content. According to Variety, this revival did just that: older episodes of Malcolm in the Middle saw a significant 108% increase in views the week the new series launched, showing that fans wanted to revisit the original show after watching the revival.
With the show doing so well, everyone’s wondering if it will be renewed for another season. Hulu is likely very keen on bringing it back, but for now, the stars, Boomer and Muniz, aren’t revealing much. When asked by TVLine if they’d return, Boomer jokingly claimed to be too old and tired, while Muniz didn’t rule it out, but also didn’t express strong support for continuing the series.

Frankie Muniz said he enjoyed revisiting his role as Malcolm, but clarified that this project was always planned as a limited series. He doesn’t believe it was a pilot for a larger show, though he’s open to the possibility if fans respond positively. Originally, the story was conceived as a single movie, intended to be self-contained. They ultimately decided to present it as four episodes that tell one continuous story, and that was the sole purpose of making it.
