If “Love Is Blind” doesn’t make significant improvements soon, I might decide to stop following Netflix’s dating experiment. The recent season once again highlighted the most disappointing aspect of this show: Many men don’t take it seriously. There are exceptions, like Cameron Hamilton, Brennon Lemieux, Brett Brown, and Garrett Josemans who appeared sincere in their search for love, but unfortunately, too many guys seem unprepared and immature for the task.
They often lack the necessary emotional depth, have unresolved emotional baggage, are financially irresponsible, or live in dismal living conditions that would make HGTV cringe. They approach the pods with a misguided belief that they can transform from a damaged project into potential husbands in just six weeks, thanks to a sympathetic woman seeking a fixer-upper.
It’s pretty obvious to see the issue here, and it’s not hidden in subtle undertones. After making misogynistic jokes as a way to lighten the mood during season eight, Dave acknowledges that he has been disrespectful towards women in his relationships. Instead of getting married, what you need is therapy, my friend. Unfortunately, many male contestants are treating this as a joke, and it reflects poorly on the show. I propose that the show should escalate the joke by having the men date artificial intelligence women instead.
Admit it, I’m genuinely captivated by the way Mason adores the movie “Her”. His mind was astonished by his bond with Meg to the point where he repeatedly questioned her reality. He expresses that she seems to say things that sound like a highly advanced AI bot tailored to echo what he desires. Intrigued, she asks him if he’s seen the film, and his response is one of disbelief that someone else shares this unique movie experience. It’s a charming moment, despite their similarities being rather shallow, but their relationship takes an unexpected turn following the fallout from their quadrangle with Madison and Alex. Despite none of them leaving the pods engaged, unfortunately, Mason’s suspicion that Meg could be an AI bot created to cater to his desires had taken root in my mind.
The theme these gentlemen on this show seem to yearn for is not an equal counterpart who can question and guide them, but rather a submissive voice that offers compliments and finds their flaws endearing. A prime example occurred during Nick and Hannah’s trying engagement last season, where Nick desired equality but leaned on his parents to cover his expenses and care for his pets, while Hannah had been self-reliant throughout her adult life and gave up her job to participate in the show. Nick often struggled to grasp Hannah’s point of view and instead asked for compliments rather than feeling upset when he couldn’t operate a broom, cook pasta, or satisfy her sexually. In season three, Cole referred to Zanab as “bratty” and “bipolar” when she criticized his inadequate cooking skills during dinner. When she voiced concerns about his immaturity and untidiness, he expressed a desire for a wife who would laugh with him and “uplift” him. Rather than seeking mutual growth to earn respect, Cole suggested that Zanab should merely be sweet-tempered and unassuming.
Now, both Hannah and Zanab shouldn’t belittle or humiliate their potential partners on television. However, the men should not have joined Love Is Blind if they weren’t ready to face the challenges of marrying a stranger in just six weeks.
In my perspective, if “Love Is Blind” persists in producing babies, it’s only fair to provide them with a pacifier. Moreover, introducing an artificial companion could enrich the show’s exploration: How many men would opt for a synthetic partner? Naturally, not every man would reject a real human. However, the three to four rather superficial gentlemen who seem to discuss crypto, Joe Rogan, and Brazilian jujitsu each season might find themselves drawn to their ideal captive audience, freeing up genuine women from their time-wasting conversation.
Perhaps you might be wondering, Would men ever intentionally court an artificial intelligence woman?. They already do. Men are eagerly engaging with bots that share the same interests, never get offended about their weight (since they don’t have a physical form), accept knowledge of their poor financial situation (you only need $19.99 per month), and won’t complain about inadequate meals (since they don’t eat). These relationships may extend beyond the virtual pods. If Netflix were to invest in advanced hologram technology similar to that seen in Blade Runner 2029, these digital couples could move into cohabitation, a stage where traditional partners learn about each other’s commitment and ineptitude. In this tech-driven dating world, arguments over clothes left on the floor would significantly decrease, giving way to less dismal scenes of men conversing with their AI partners through speakers in their homes.
If men aspire for healthy, genuine connections with fellow humans, they should invest in their mental, emotional, and spiritual resilience, something I wholeheartedly encourage. However, history has shown that some men might opt for appearing on reality TV and courting an AI entity over seeking professional help – and I can’t wait to catch the spectacle on Netflix! Chris Coelen, take a moment from your breakfast and consider whether Netflix could possibly acquire OpenAI before Elon Musk does. Yes, it’s alarming that AI’s carbon footprint is worsening our climate crisis, but the intrigue of witnessing a grown man proposing to an empty space would be quite a captivating payoff.
