New episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord are out now! Similar to previous parts, they’re filled with nods to other stories and characters from the larger Star Wars galaxy. These hidden references have become a fun trademark of the series, which follows the story of Darth Maul.
Here are some of the key Easter eggs featured in episodes 3 and 4 of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.
List of key Star Wars easter eggs in Maul – Shadow Lord Episode 3 and 4
Maul’s Tea Ceremony With Devon
In the beginning of episode 3, Maul asks Devon to participate in a tea ceremony with him. He explains that the tea is Cassius tea, which he previously enjoyed when served by Pre Vizsla during events in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Rylee participating in the sport
A photo shows Brander Lawson’s son, Rylee, playing a sport similar to lacrosse. The design of the sticks used in the game originally appeared in the movie Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, which takes place earlier in the Star Wars story.
The Jedi Hunters
The book Maul – Shadow Lord mentions Jedi Hunters, which seems to link them to the Imperial Inquisitorius. The Inquisitorius were Force-sensitive dark side users trained by Darth Vader.
The Sith Shadow
In one scene from the animated series Maul – Shadow Lord, Darth Maul’s shadow is designed to look like Darth Vader as he appears in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This type of visual effect isn’t new and has been used in other Star Wars productions before.
Whispers from Maul’s lightsaber
The latest episodes hint that Darth Maul’s lightsaber is somehow connected to him, almost like it’s communicating with him. This adds a mysterious and spiritual layer to the Star Wars story.
A reference to Mandalore
During a conversation, Maul brought up the Siege of Mandalore, a key event from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series featuring Ahsoka Tano, and its connection to the events leading up to Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. He also revealed that, after breaking free from Republic imprisonment, he sought help from the Pyke Syndicate.
Master Daki’s advice
Master Daki warns Devon against letting her need for revenge control her decisions. This echoes a common idea in Star Wars stories – the importance of guidance and self-control.
Maul’s cybernetic legs
In a battle, Master Daki throws Maul off balance by attacking his legs, a move that highlights his robotic legs. This echoes a key moment from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, where Obi-Wan Kenobi first overcame Maul in combat.
The episodes feature other details as well, like the appearance of a Star Destroyer and the creatures known as nexu.
The first four episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord are now streaming on Disney+.
