‘Magnificent Century’ Star Meryem Uzerli Headed to Mipcom for Global Launch of Turkish Age-Gap Romance Series ‘RU’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a critic with a penchant for international cinema, particularly those hailing from the enchanting lands of Turkey, I find myself eagerly anticipating the debut of “RU.” Having delved into the rich tapestry of Turkish dramas, I can attest to Meryem Uzerli‘s captivating performances and the intriguing narratives that have made Turkish TV a global sensation.

Famous Turkish actress Meryem Uzerli, recognized worldwide for her portrayal of a former slave transforming into the powerful spouse of Ottoman emperor Suleiman in the popular series “Magnificent Century,” is preparing to attend Mipcom with a fresh project centered around an age-gap romance called “RU.

Uzerli is heading to Cannes for the global debut of “RU,” a series produced by Turkish TV giant Medyapim. In this production, she portrays Rayyan, a 38-year-old woman grappling with marital issues, who unexpectedly finds herself in a romantic relationship with a 20-year-old named Ozar.

The series titled ‘RU,’ a Turkish adaptation with themes similar to Amazon’s ‘The Idea of You,’ is set to debut at Madd Entertainment’s presentation in the Cannes Carlton Grand Salon on October 21st, 6 p.m. Uzerli will be present for this occasion. Additionally, Madd Entertainment plans to reveal clips from their English-language drama ‘El Turco,’ starring Can Yaman, who will also attend the event.

The series titled ‘RU’ marks Uzerli’s re-entry into the world of Turkish dramas following a break of about five years. This story unfolds in a coastal town on the Aegean Sea, where Rayyan operates a restaurant called RU alongside her husband. Trouble brews when she finds herself embroiled with Ozar, whose mother is struggling with cancer. Together, they must face the backlash and disapproval from society due to their unconventional relationship.

Ates Ince, the managing director of Madd Entertainment (a collaboration between top Turkish production houses Ay Yapim and Medyapim), noted that ‘RU’ offers an innovative approach to storytelling, which he described as ‘unconventional and captivating.’ This unique style is causing quite a stir in the Turkish TV industry, turning it on its head.

As a passionate cinephile, I’d have to agree with Ince’s sentiments about the challenges of producing shows like this for free Turkish television. The edgy nature of such series makes it difficult to air without certain creative liberties, which may not align well with the usual standards of free-TV programming in Turkey.

The European Union seems to be actively attracting viewers from international premium platforms, particularly those who have an affinity for bold and innovative Turkish content.

The first season of “RU” has been a popular success among locals ever since it premiered on the Turkish streaming platform Gain back in May. Plans for a second installment are currently underway.
