As an avid Magic: The Gathering player with decades of experience under my belt, I must say, 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year! The announcement that Foundations will remain legal until 2029 in Standard format means we’ll have a strong foundation to build upon for years to come. And the news of set rotations changing to be based around calendar years? Brilliant! No more scrabbling to keep up with those pesky rotation dates, eh?
In a matter of weeks, the Foundations set of Magic: The Gathering will be released, and, true to form, Wizards of the Coast have an exciting lineup prepared for the year 2025.
This time, the team has shared that Foundations will remain legal in the Standard format at least until 2029. Consequently, these foundational cards are expected to serve as the structural basis for the sets released in 2025 and onwards.
In the future, starting from 2027, the rotation of sets will align with calendar years, simplifying the process of staying updated on what’s considered legal.
2025 brings us a wealth of information regarding Magic: The Gathering, featuring its exciting collaborations with Final Fantasy and Spider-Man.
Magic The Gathering in 2025 – what’s changed?
In the past few years, Wizards has been churning out products at an impressive pace, and it appears this trend will continue.
The modification is that Magic: The Gathering (MTG) players will now receive three new original sets annually, followed by three collaborative sets called Universes Beyond.
Each year from now on, we’re expecting an extra three crossover games that include the likes of Fallout, Assassin’s Creed, Warhammer 40K, and others we’ve previously encountered.
Magic The Gathering’s 2025 roadmap
February – Aetherdrift
In February, the game Aetherdrift is expected to transport players to three unnamed destinations within the Magic universe, as part of a collection centered around racing.
Look forward to the arrival of Chandra and Nissa, racing crews identified by their color schemes, and a primary emphasis on the Artifact class in vehicles.
April – Tarkir Dragonstorm
In April, we’re returning to the world of Tarkir once more, giving players the opportunity to revisit this place after a decade-long absence, however, it won’t be quite like the last time you were there.
In this scenario, dragons hold dominion over Tarkir, while humans wage resistance. Being a devotee of dragon-kind, I’m thrilled about this setup. Admittedly, it’s a long shot, but I can’t help but hope for the reappearance of an Ur Dragon in future releases.
June – Final Fantasy
2025’s initial crossover, titled “Universes Beyond,” promises to merge the worlds of Final Fantasy and Magic, offering a wealth of desired elements such as Chocobos, Behemoths, summon spells, weapons, and none other than Sephiroth himself.
In the recently unveiled trailer at MagicCon Vegas, we catch a sneak peek of certain artwork featuring what appears to be the One-Winged Angel, seemingly readying an attack on… the character you’re familiar with.
As a reminder, the Final Fantasy set will include cards from every mainline entry.
August – Edge of Eternities
We didn’t get a whole host of information about Edge of Eternities, other than that it marks a trip to space for Magic players. We’ll update this as we hear more.
TBA – Spider-Man and more
Spider-Man signifies the initial release from the extended partnership between Marvel and Wizards of the Coast, excluding the Secret Lair drop slated for late 2024.
Additionally, another collection is slated for Universes Beyond, but for the moment, the creators at Wizards of the Coast are choosing to keep it under wraps.
