The development of Hasbro’s live-action Magic: The Gathering film has made significant progress. The duo, Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, who were involved in an unrealized Power Rangers movie script for Hasbro, have been appointed to pen the screenplay for Magic: The Gathering.
According to Deadline, it was previously mentioned that Matt Johnson, currently a director at BlackBerry, was in discussions about directing Magic: The Gathering. However, it’s unclear if he finalized his agreement with Legendary and Hasbro for this project. Besides the aborted Power Rangers movie, the duo of Gardner and Fitzgerald have also been involved in The Trench, a film intended to be part of the DC Extended Universe, serving as a spin-off from Aquaman. They are also collaborating on Trancers, an original series for Prime Video that’s inspired by the popular sci-fi movie with the same name.
For nearly three decades, Magic: The Gathering has been a highly sought-after trading card game. Its creator, Wizards of the Coast, even obtained the rights to Dungeons & Dragons prior to Hasbro taking over the publisher in 1999. Now, Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary plan to kick off a shared universe encompassing films and television series, using Magic: The Gathering as their starting point.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to hear that Hasbro has hinted at new video game releases for both Magic: The Gathering and D&D, but unfortunately, we don’t have a release date yet. Recently, Hasbro has been working hard to expand the D&D universe as a multimedia franchise, with the live-action film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves being the latest addition. The movie garnered positive reviews, but its global box office earnings of $208.2 million fell short of expectations, meaning a sequel might not be in the cards right away. However, it found success on streaming platforms. Excitingly, there’s also a live-action series in development for Netflix!
WotC (Wizards of the Coast) just unveiled the highly successful collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy, breaking records as the top-selling set in the franchise’s history. Some of these cards may have shed light on a mystery from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
