Magic The Gathering May Have Weighed In On Final Fantasy 7 Canon

In the game Final Fantasy VII, Cloud can choose one of his comrades for a special outing to the Gold Saucer Skywheel, but Square Enix hasn’t definitively stated which character is the correct choice. The return of this event in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth might not be considered canonical, however, hints about the canon companion could potentially come from an upcoming Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy card, due to some variations featuring alternate art.

The card being discussed is titled “Secret Rendezvous,” found in the themed pre-built Commander deck called Limit Break, based on Final Fantasy VII. This particular card illustrates Cloud on a Skywheel date, and it has four distinct versions. Each version shows Cloud seated opposite one of the characters: Tifa, Yuffie, Aerith, or Barret.

On the Magic: The Gathering website, it’s confirmed that Tifa’s version of Secret Rendezvous is the standard one included in the deck, while the other three versions are exclusive to Collector Booster packs. This might suggest a hint for the upcoming third game in the FF7 Remake series featuring Sephiroth, or it could be the MTG team’s preference for Tifa as his partner.

In the Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy collection, Final Fantasy VII is part of a group of four games that have their own pre-made Commander decks, with Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy XIV being the other members. The primary set in this collection features cards illustrating characters and settings from all 16 major Final Fantasy games.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the highly anticipated fusion of two iconic worlds, Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy, is hitting local game stores and big box retailers on June 13! For those who can’t wait, mark your calendars for June 6, as local game stores will be hosting prerelease events. Let the epic battles commence!
