Maggie Smith died exactly one year after another Harry Potter star

As a gamer who has grown up with the magical world of Harry Potter, the news of Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon’s passing within a year of each other feels like a one-two punch to the heart. They were more than just actors; they were the embodiment of our beloved characters, Professor McGonagall and Albus Dumbledore.

Fans of the Harry Potter series have been shaken by the news of Maggie Smith’s passing, and some have found a rather peculiar connection involving another actor from the franchise.

On September 27th, it was publicly announced by the family of Maggie Smith, who played beloved characters in both Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, that she had passed away in a hospital after a peaceful morning.

As an ardent admirer of the magical realm, I’ve taken it upon myself to honor the iconic character, Professor McGonagall, who graced our screens in every Harry Potter film from 2001 through 2011. What’s more intriguing, though, is a subtle connection I’ve noticed regarding her co-stars. Namely, the talented Dame Maggie Smith passed away exactly one year after Michael Gambon, who breathed life into Albus Dumbledore.

On September 27, 2023, Gambon passed away after a spell with pneumonia. Several other actors from the Harry Potter series have sadly also left us since the movies were released, but Gambon was the last one, which makes his surprising link to Smith even more noticeable.

Tragically, Michael Gambon and Maggie Smith, two beloved actors from the Harry Potter series, passed away only a year apart, leaving us all with a sense of loss and wonder. 😔🔮 #HarryPotter

One fan on Twitter noted that Michael Gambon and Maggie Smith each passed away, with Gambon passing in 2021 and Smith the previous year, on September 27th.

A second weighed in, “One year ago today: Michael Gambon passed away. Today: Maggie Smith passed away. Two legendary people who played two of our favorite Harry Potter characters.”

A third person commented that it’s incredibly sad that Maggie Smith passed away exactly one year after Michael Gambon did.

In real life, they were good friends and had acted together before, such as in the 1999 movie “The Last September.” Notably, their Harry Potter characters shared many characteristics.

At Hogwarts, Dumbledore and McGonagall stood as strong pillars of hope, demonstrating that virtuous magic could vanquish darkness. The duo was consistently supportive of Harry, encouraging him to grow and excel, though they sometimes employed firm guidance in the process.

McGonagall served as Deputy Headmistress under Dumbledore until his demise in The Half-Blood Prince. Subsequently, she took a role in defending Hogwarts from Voldemort’s conquest in the two Deathly Hallows movies.

Outside of Harry Potter, both Gambon and Smith had careers spanning decades.

Smith garnered several awards, notably two Oscars. She won Best Actress for her role in the 1969 film The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and she was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her work in the 1978 movie California Suite.

Back in the gaming world, I’ve had some pretty epic victories, much like my favorite actor, Gary Oldman. He nabbed a total of four BAFTAs and two SAG awards, with one of them being for the mind-blowing 2001 period game, Gosford Park. Guess who else was part of that incredible journey? None other than the legendary, Mr. Smith!

You can watch all the Harry Potter movies on Max.
