Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein Movie ‘The Bride!’ Debuts Maniacal, Bloody First Trailer at CinemaCon as Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley Promise ‘Till Death Do Us Part’

It’s alive!

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s gritty, punk rock reimagining of Frankenstein’s monster, titled ‘The Bride,’ unveiled a chilling first glimpse at CinemaCon this week during Warner Bros.’ gathering for theater owners and officials. With an estimated budget of $90 million, the film features Christian Bale as the monster and Jessie Buckley as his supernatural spouse. From the sneak peek Gyllenhaal provided, their union seems to be a marriage straight out of hell. Given the movie’s newly disclosed tagline, ‘Here comes the mother of all brides,’ it’s clear that this is no ordinary love story.

The initial, yet grim, unseen scene unfolds with the character played by Buckley tumbling down stairs, shattering bones in numerous spots, ultimately landing on an operating table. Though she’s repaired, her purpose is to serve as a companion for Frankenstein’s monster.

In the trailer, a voice remarks, “It was no mere coincidence,” suggesting that her rough fall in the clip was deliberate.

Nevertheless, the monstrous pair formed an ominous relationship filled with bloodshed and brutality – a far cry from romance as we usually understand it.

In the trailer, Bale’s monster expresses, “For as long as we both shall live,” to which Buckley’s bride responds, “Now there’s only one thing left to do – to truly live.

Actress Amy Adams, known for her Oscar-nominated performances in films like “Crazy Heart” and “The Dark Knight”, has now gained recognition as a skilled filmmaker. Her latest directorial venture, “The Lost Daughter,” released in 2021, earned an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay. The movie stars Penélope Cruz, Annette Bening, and Peter Sarsgaard, who is incidentally married to Gyllenhaal.

Following “The Lost Daughter,” Gyllenhaal expressed her desire for her next film to be vibrant and large-scale, as well as daring – although she wasn’t entirely sure what that would involve. Later, at a gathering, she encountered a man with a “Bride of Frankenstein” tattoo, which sparked an idea.

The film captivated me so much that I rushed home to watch it later,” Gyllenhaal shared with the gathering of theater owners. “Contrasting starkly with the original ‘Bride of Frankenstein,’ our bride appears significantly more, and she even speaks.

Buckley, donning dark sunglasses, chimed in: “She’s a bit naughty!”

In the original 1935 movie, Frankenstein yearned for a bride, any bride would do. This made Gyllenhaal ponder, “What if his bride, when she returns, surpasses all he could ever imagine and doesn’t conform to the expectations he or society had for her?

Buckley described their partnership as reminiscent of cunning criminal duos seen in iconic films like “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Wild at Heart.

Upcoming in theaters isn’t just “The Bride” that draws inspiration from Mary Shelley’s creature; in November, Netflix is set to release Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” starring Mia Goth and Oscar Isaac. The Frankenstein tale is an old classic, but recent adaptations like “Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein” with Kenneth Branagh and Robert De Niro, and “Victor Frankenstein” with Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy, haven’t fared well either at the box office or with critics. It will be intriguing to observe how audiences react to two movies centered on similar themes premiering close together in time.

Warner Bros. has decided to release “The Bride” in cinemas on March 6, 2026. The initial plan was to premiere it on September 26, 2025, but the studio postponed its release this week, providing some additional time before del Toro’s version hits the screens.

At the Warner Bros. showcase during CinemaCon, co-chairpersons Mike de Luca and Pam Abdy generated excitement about upcoming films like Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” Ryan Coogler’s chilling vampire movie titled “Sinners,” and “Final Destination: Bloodlines.

Abdy mentioned that in the upcoming months, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group plans to unveil a diverse array of films across all genres, directed by an impressive roster of directors and featuring some of the most acclaimed actors from this era,” or

“According to Abdy, over the next few months, Warner B Bros. Movie Studio will be putting out movies covering various genres, with a distinguished set of filmmakers at the helm and several well-known actors gracing the screen.
