Mafia Series ‘Cold Summer’ Sells to Walter Presents in the U.S. and Canada Ahead of Linear U.K. Premiere on Channel 4 (EXCLUSIVE)

Beta Film has secured a significant agreement for the Mafia series “Cold Summer” with Walter Presents, for the U.S. and Canada. This deal comes before the show’s initial broadcast in the UK on Channel 4, scheduled for April 13. The boxset will also be accessible on their streaming service around the same time. Earlier this year, it was already sold to SBS Australia.

The show set new records on its native RAI Italy, opening with a staggering 4.6 million viewers and an impressive 23% share of the market, far exceeding the usual viewership. It was recognized for two Italian Film Awards, or Nastri d’Argento, in the categories of best crime series and leading actor.

The eight-episode television show, based on the book by ex-anti-Mafia lawyer Gianrico Carofiglio, takes place in the early ’90s in southern Italy and portrays a tense partnership between a low-level Mafia leader and an honest police sergeant named Pietro Fenoglio.

An eight-episode series, derived from Gianrico Carofiglio’s novel, is set in southern Italy during the early ’90s. It depicts a challenging alliance between a minor Mafia don and an upright police officer named Pietro Fenoglio.

Fenoglio senses that a Mafia conflict is on the brink in the tranquil coastal town of Bari, Apulia. However, others find it hard to accept that the Mafia would track cocaine from rough Sicily to peaceful Apulia, not even the skeptical police chief of Bari, who scolds Pietro for his unconventional detective methods.

In his relentless mission to expose the emerging Mafia leaders in town, Pietro’s marriage crumbles. However, when the merciless Mafia leader Nicola Grimaldi learns that his young son has been abducted and killed, Vito – a former friend of Grimaldi who is now under suspicion – seeks protection with the police. This alliance with the elusive informant, despite Pietro’s initial resistance, draws him into a shadowy realm, revealing that sometimes, the lines between law enforcers and criminals can blur.

This show features Paolo Sassanelli and Giulia Vecchio, two highly respected Italian actors who are well-known from the series “Trust.” The series is directed by Alessandro Casale and created by Gianrico Carofiglio, Doriana Leondeff, Antonio Leotti, and Oliviero Del Papa. It’s produced by Clemart for Rai Fiction in collaboration with Beta Film. Additionally, Beta Film takes care of international distribution.
