Approximately a year following the significant financial underperformance of the movie “Madame Web” at the box office, star Sydney Sweeney openly shared her candid thoughts on the film’s disappointing outcome. Alongside Sweeney, the film featured Dakota Johnson, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott, and Tahar Rahim. Earning a dismal 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $100 million globally according to Box Office Mojo, “Madame Web” is broadly regarded as an utter failure. Additionally, it represented another unsuccessful endeavor by Sony to replicate the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In a recent interview, Sweeney unpacked her perspective on Madame Web’s poor reception:
To put it simply, for me, having a great time is all that truly counts. Regardless of how well a movie performs at the box office, if you’re enjoying the process, that’s what truly matters. Naturally, we all hope for the film to be acclaimed, adored, and successful, as everyone benefits when it is.
The actress also explained what drew her to star in a Marvel film to begin with:
It’s delightful to contribute to endeavors that exceed personal boundaries. At the time, I hadn’t embarked on a studio film, and I was establishing my production company [Fifty-Fifty Films]. I had some projects I yearned to present to studios, and I required a means to elevate my reputation within the studio environment. Participating in such a project significantly boosts one’s market value.
In addition, I aimed at performing activities that my adolescent cousins could appreciate. Since they struggle to comprehend my work, I longed for the opportunity to showcase something entertaining and appealing to them.
