More of “Ma” is coming soon! Blumhouse Productions is working on a sequel to their 2019 revenge thriller, featuring Octavia Spencer reprising her role as the title character. At this point, there’s no confirmed director or release date for the project.
Jason Blum, head of Blumhouse Productions, declared the anticipation for the sequel after ‘Ma’s’ successful debut in 2019, praising both the film and Octavia Spencer’s unforgettable portrayal of Ma. Reflecting the character’s catchphrase ‘don’t make me drink alone’, Blum is excited that Spencer will reprise her role for another round.
In the initial movie, a band of teenagers befriend an unusual character, Sue Ann Ellington – a solitary veterinarian with a zest for parties – portrayed by Spencer. Nicknamed “Ma,” she permits the youngsters to hold their gatherings in her basement. However, events take a dark turn when their bond begins to deteriorate, leading to violent consequences.
In May of 2019, film “Ma,” directed once again by Tate Taylor who had previously guided Mae’s Academy Award-winning performance in “The Help,” was released by Universal Pictures. This modestly budgeted Blumhouse production turned out to be a significant success at the box office, accumulating a global revenue of $61 million.
Since its release, the movie has gained a larger fanbase over time, leading to numerous memes such as parody posters and reaction images. In fact, Spencer herself participated in this trend in 2020, hosting a competition for the “best Ma Meme” and giving away multiple prizes. Furthermore, in 2024, she referenced the movie in a video shared by the Kamala Harris presidential campaign.
In May, “Ma” was among the movies chosen for a re-release as part of Blumhouse’s Halfway to Halloween promotion. The film, together with “M3GAN” and “Annabelle”, had a special one-night screening in cinemas across the country.
