M-Appeal Acquires Worldwide Rights to ‘Love’ and ‘Dreams,’ Completing Dag Johan Haugerud’s Trilogy (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie lover with a keen interest in exploratory and thought-provoking films, I am thrilled to hear about M-Appeal acquiring the worldwide rights for Norwegian filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud’s “Love” and “Dreams.” Having been moved by his previous work, “Sex,” which premiered at Berlinale earlier this year, I eagerly anticipate these next installments in his evocative trilogy.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve learned that M-Appeal has expanded their collaboration with Norwegian filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud. They have now acquired the global rights for his follow-up films, “Love” and “Dreams.” Previously, they had managed the rights for his critically acclaimed film, “Sex,” which premiered at Berlinale this year. I can’t wait to see how Haugerud’s unique storytelling continues to captivate audiences around the world with these new productions.

In my perspective, “Love” and “Dreams” are the final pieces in Haugerud’s captivating trilogy that explores the intricacies of human connections, desire, and societal expectations.

As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I’d describe “Love” as the captivating tale of two intriguing characters: Marianne, a rational doctor, and Tor, a caring nurse. Both these individuals steer clear of traditional relationships. One fateful night, following an unsuccessful blind date, I find myself on a ferry, where I cross paths with Tor. He confides in me that he frequently spends his nights aboard seeking fleeting connections with men, sharing tales of unexpected intimacy and profound conversations. This unique perspective piques my curiosity, leading me to ponder the societal norms I’ve long adhered to and consider whether such casual encounters might offer an alternative path for me as well.

The movie explores a unique perspective on women’s sexuality, shedding light on the significant differences in how society views and judges the sexual liberation of women versus that of men, especially gay men.

As I sat down in the darkened theater, I couldn’t help but feel a flutter of excitement in my chest. The anticipation built as I watched the opening credits roll, and then it began – “Love.” This film was unlike anything I had seen before.

Johanne, a young girl, discovers her first deep affection for her teacher. To keep her feelings hidden, she pens down her emotions and experiences. Her mother and grandmother are taken aback by the explicit content at first but are later drawn in by the beauty of her writing. As they ponder over the ethical implications and potential risks of sharing Johanne’s work, she grapples with the difference between romantic ideals and real-life complexities. Through this process, Johanne embarks on a profound journey exploring self-discovery, love, and sexuality.

The novel “Dreams” offers an intriguing three-generation viewpoint from women on love, relationships, sexuality, and personal growth, making the characters’ stories more nuanced and authentic.

The movie brilliantly brings to life the raw emotions and thrill of experiencing first love for the very first time, all while maintaining a genuine and compassionate tone. The visuals in this film are stunningly captivating and add an extra layer to the narrative, intensifying its emotional resonance.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “The thought-provoking film ‘Sex,’ which is the first installment of a trilogy, made its debut at Berlinale in the Panorama section and was showered with three awards. To date, it has been acquired for distribution in North America, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, France, the UK, and Ireland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Greece, Portugal, Switzerland, the ex-Yugoslavian territories, Hungary, South Korea, and Indonesia.”
