As a lifelong cinema enthusiast and avid follower of the ever-evolving streaming landscape, I must say that this week’s ratings have been quite intriguing. The soft start of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 against Netflix’s “Worst Ex Ever” is a testament to the unpredictable nature of audience preferences and the competitive spirit among streaming giants.
In the August 30-September 5 timeframe, Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” struggled to maintain its lead against Netflix’s “Worst Ex Ever,” ultimately losing the position as the most-watched original streaming TV series.
Last week, I found myself captivated by Lee Daniels’ “The Deliverance,” which claimed the top spot on the streaming original movies chart. This chilling Netflix production, featuring the talents of Andra Day and Glenn Close, garnered an impressive 8.3 million views and a staggering 930.8 million minutes watched since its debut on August 30.
During the week ending August 29th, “The Rings of Power” amassed a total watch time of 764.7 million minutes across its three newly released episodes. The second season initially faced delays due to the writers and actors strike in the previous year. As of now, the entirety of Season 2, which premiered on Labor Day weekend 2022, has accumulated a total view time of 827.9 million minutes. While this is an impressive showing, it may not have met the lofty expectations set by the popularity and prominence of the franchise, as well as its significance to Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.
Viewership of “The Rings of Power” Season 1 surged following the release of Season 2. As a result, it re-entered the streaming original series top 10, peaking at the eighth spot for the week, with a total of 229.2 million minutes watched.
In a stunning turn of events, ‘Worst Ex Ever,’ a four-part horror documentary produced by Blumhouse Television, secured the top spot among series, racking up an impressive 939.1 million minutes of viewing time during that particular period. Trailing closely behind at third position was Netflix’s ‘The Accident.’ Despite slipping from its No. 1 ranking the week prior, the Mexican drama series managed to maintain its popularity with a strong 589.4 million minutes watched in its second week.
This week, the fantasy drama series “Kaos,” featuring Jeff Goldblum, debuted at number 4 on the television rankings. In its initial seven days of broadcast, a total of 580.8 million minutes were spent watching the show spread across eight different episodes.
This week, a fresh addition to the list of top 10 movies is the documentary “Gary” about Gary Coleman, a troubled child star, under the direction of Robin Dashwood. It has garnered 102.8 million minutes of viewership and attracted 1.1 million views.
