As a seasoned film enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic exploration under my belt, I must say that the latest streaming trends have left me both intrigued and slightly perplexed. The recent data on viewership drops and surges is a fascinating study in audience dynamics, much like watching a well-crafted drama unfold on screen.
In its second week, the viewing numbers for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 saw a significant decrease on Luminate‘s weekly streaming originals rankings.
During the initial seven days after its release, the Amazon Prime Video series ranked second with a total of 764.7 million minutes watched across the first three episodes and the first day of the fourth episode. However, during the following week (Sept. 6-12), which encompassed the debut of Episode 4 and the premiere of Episode 5, the viewership dropped to 372.7 million minutes, placing it in fourth position. Despite having fewer new episodes to stream compared to the previous week, this significant decrease in viewership is concerning for a high-profile title like this, especially when one would expect strong word-of-mouth recommendations at this stage. It’s worth mentioning that Luminate only tracks U.S. viewership, and Amazon has previously highlighted that many of its viewers come from other regions; unfortunately, there’s no data provided to back up this claim.
This past week, “The Perfect Couple” has been the most popular title, garnering significant attention with a staggering 3.4 billion minutes watched during its debut. Remarkably, it’s the first series on Luminate’s chart to surpass 3 billion minutes since the second part of “Bridgerton” Season 2 was released in June.
In the second spot was the series “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” which racked up a staggering 781.1 million minutes of viewing time in its first week on Hulu. This was closely trailed by another unscripted show, Season 8 of “Selling Sunset,” which garnered 586.7 million minutes watched during its debut.
In terms of viewership, “Rings of Power” surpassed “Outlast” Season 2 (with approximately 317 million minutes watched), “Worst Ex Ever” (310.7 million) and “Kaos” (307.9 million). Interestingly, the lowest three titles on the list – “The Accident,” “Bad Monkey” and “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist” – all garnered less than 300 million minutes watched each.
In the rankings of streaming movies, “Rebel Ridge” premiered at the peak position, racking up a whopping 1.5 billion minutes of viewing time on Netflix within its first week. Meanwhile, “The Deliverance,” which previously held the No. 1 spot, came in second with 309.8 million minutes watched, and “The Union” placed third for its fourth consecutive week on Netflix, accumulating 149 million minutes viewed.
The remaining spots on the chart were occupied by titles that had been watched less than a million minutes, including “Apollo 12: Survival”, “The Killer”, “The Assistant 2” (a seldom-seen entry for Tubi), “Jackpot!”, “Incoming”, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and “The Instigators”.
