Luminate Streaming Ratings: Netflix and Peacock’s Scott and Laci Peterson Docs Bookend the Chart August 16-22

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for true crime dramas and a soft spot for light-hearted comedies, I must say that the latest streaming trends have piqued my curiosity. The captivating tale of Laci Peterson, as portrayed in “American Murder: Laci Peterson,” has undeniably gripped the nation, with its viewership skyrocketing week over week. This fascination with true crime narratives seems to be a universal language, transcending geographical boundaries and age groups.

“During August 16-22, ‘American Murder: The Family Next Door’ (about Laci Peterson) became the most-watched original streaming series in the U.S., according to Luminate. This marks its first full week of availability. It had been in fifth place with 255.3 million minutes viewed the previous week, but was only available for just two days during that time frame.”

Remarkably, the topic under discussion was mirrored in both the TV listings’ title and the premiere of Peacock’s “Face to Face With Scott Peterson”. In its initial three days of streaming, it ranked 10th place with a total viewing time of 147.5 million minutes.

“The fourth season of ‘Emily in Paris’ premiered on Netflix, securing a second place debut by being watched for a total of 843.6 million minutes within its first week. This light-hearted series has consistently done well for Netflix and is expected to maintain its popularity on the viewership charts for an extended period this season. The initial drop included only five episodes, with the remaining five set to be released in September.”

Over the past two weeks, three spots on the rankings were claimed by titles that have appeared before: “Love Is Blind: UK,” with a total of 402.9 million minutes watched during its second week, and “The Umbrella Academy” Season 4, also in its second week, with 351.7 million minutes viewed. The third spot went to “Love Island USA” Season 6, which has been steadily ranking throughout the summer, with a total of 341.7 million minutes watched.

In its inaugural week, I found myself captivated by the fresh, laugh-out-loud comedy series titled “Bad Monkey,” starring Vince Vaughn on Apple TV+. This intriguing show garnered a remarkable viewership of 218.4 million minutes watched during its first full week! Trailing closely behind was “Bel-Air” Season 3, with an impressive 210.2 million minutes viewed in the initial seven days since the release of its first three episodes and the debut of its fourth. Interestingly enough, the No. 8 and 9 spots were held by returning favorites: “Love of My Life” and “Evil” Season 4, which amassed 167.6 million and 156.7 million minutes watched, respectively. What a fascinating race of popular series!

During the August 16-22 viewing period, Netflix’s “The Union” premiered as the most-watched title of the week, garnering a staggering 1.7 billion minutes of view time and securing the top spot overall.

In its initial week, the spy comedy starring Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg attracted more than three times as many viewers as Amazon Prime Video’s “Jackpot!” with a total watch time of 412 million minutes, making it the most-watched film.

On Apple TV+, only one other movie surpassed the 100-million-minute viewing mark – it was “The Instigators,” which took the runner-up spot with a total of 154 million minutes viewed. The movies that followed in order were “Inside the Mind of a Dog,” “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” “Find Me Falling,” “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” “A Family Affair,” “I Can’t Live Without You,” and “Daughters.” These titles all had viewership ranging from 42.2 million to 78.6 million minutes watched.
