As a lifelong sports enthusiast and streaming aficionado who has witnessed the rise of digital content consumption, I must say it’s fascinating to see how Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are making their mark in the sports-content arena. The data from Luminate demonstrates a clear trend towards these platforms becoming significant players, with Netflix leading the pack at over 26%.

In comparison to traditional television industry norms, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are fairly new, yet they’re swiftly gaining significant influence in the realm of sports content.

According to Luminate’s latest findings, both Amazon Prime Video and Netflix have been expanding their original sports content among mainstream streamers over the last four years. Specifically, Netflix represents over 26% of sports-related programming from 2020 to 2024, while Amazon Prime Video accounts for about 19%.

The statistics do not take into account sports programming available on the ESPN+ streaming hub, nor for the programming available on services such as the Fox Sports 1 cable network. Luminate, which is part of PMC, EbMaster’s parent company, produces data focuses on original streaming movies nad TV programs on such subscription-based streaming platforms including AMC+, Amazon Prime, Discovery+, Disney+, Hulu, Max, Netflix, Paramount+ and Peacock.

In the rankings, Max from Warner Bros. Discovery and Peacock by NBCUniversal followed closely behind with a share of 11.5% for Max and 10.3% for Peacock respectively.

Disney+ is currently priced at 5.2%, however, Disney has expanded the selection of ESPN+ content available to its service users, with additional offerings for those who choose to purchase a more comprehensive “package” of Disney streaming services that encompasses both Hulu and other services.

In my viewing experience, I tend to gravitate towards sports-related content that leans more towards biographies, documentaries, history, and talk shows. This diverse range spans from “Game Theory with Bomani Jones” on Max, all the way to “NFL Tailgate Takedown” on Discovery+.

According to Luminate’s research, soccer and football were the sports most often featured in the broadcasts, with multi-sports, basketball, and racing coming in as the next popular choices.
