In ‘Promotion’, the sixth season’s fourth episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, June and Luke clash sharply, promising a thrilling continuation of the storyline. Meanwhile, an unanticipated guest appears at Jezebels, where Janine is located, adding intrigue to the unfolding events.
In the third episode of Season 6, June entrusted her daughter Holly to her own mother while she set out to rescue Moira and Luke from No Man’s Land, following a Mayday mission that didn’t go as planned. To extract them, Nick was crucial, but he ended up having to fire at two Guardians during the process.
As a fellow enthusiast, let me say, if you’ve been eagerly anticipating this week’s Fallout episode, brace yourself! Although the promo hinted at some action, it seems that the newest installment is laying the groundwork for Episode 5 instead.
However, there’s much more to observe as the Hulu series offers extended interaction with Janine, concluding with a climax hinting at significant future developments. Be advised: potential spoilers lie ahead!
Luke gets some good news
In this installment, I find myself back at Mayday’s hideout, where Luke is meticulously sketching grand strategies aimed at taking down the ruthless leaders of Gilead – the extremist Commanders. However, a hint of uncertainty crosses June’s face, and she presses him for details on the execution of this plan.
Luke seems to have all the solutions, revealing their plan involves utilizing a recently discovered trading path. However, it’s evident that there’s some underlying friction or tension between the two parties.
Mark Tuello makes his way towards them and shares some positive updates: The murder accusations against Luke have been withdrawn. Now, he stands as a liberated individual following his secretive dealings with the Canadian administration (who, unofficially, also aim to oust the most powerful Commanders).
Meanwhile, when Tuello steps away, June and Luke find themselves still locked in disagreement. June suggests they return to Alaska and embark on a fresh life with the Hollys, and she’s aware of the challenges that come with defying Gilead, while Luke maintains a different perspective.
But Luke is deep in his revolutionary era and is insistent that it’s his turn to fight.
Lawrence shuts down Naomi
In New Bethleem, Commander Joseph Lawrence is demonstrating exceptional fatherhood towards Angela, who is both Janine’s biological child and also the daughter that Naomi had been taken from.
Naomi goes to express gratitude to Lawrence for the Parisian jewelry, a token of better international ties due to their recently “opened up” region. However, she attempts to kiss him, but he pulls away – to him, their union is merely a facade and holds no deeper meaning.
Lawrence is getting ready, signaling his readiness for the role of High Commander. “From now on, they will look to you for results,” she advises him, and he confidently assures her he’s up to the task, adding a touch of humor by commenting on what truly matters in their organization.
She attempts to humble him slightly by pointing out that their authority stems from their “masculinity,” in other words, their manliness. However, Lawrence counters by stating, “Power will originate from change. They understand I’m the right person for the job.
Rita has an emotional reunion
In her initial visit to New Bethlehem, Rita finds herself arriving just as Lawrence readies himself for a significant event. It’s Serena Joy, the embodiment of Gilead 2.0, who warmly welcomes her.
Although she delivers a top-notch public relations spiel, Rita is preoccupied with locating her missing sister. Their long-awaited meeting, however, turns out to be an intensely emotional reunion.
At Mayday’s Headquarters, Ellen, their coordinator, delivers a speech rejoicing in the safe arrival of Luke and Moira. Following this, she discusses the strategy they have devised for eliminating the radical Commanders prior to launching an attack on Gilead.
A minor problem arises, however: it seems they’ll be focusing on individuals called Jezebels. Given her concerns, June understands that there’s a risk of innocent women being unintentionally affected.
When Ellen points out flaws in their plan, she responds by suggesting they conduct a trial run initially. This involves secretly planting one of their own among the Jezebels undercover as a servant named Martha, who can interact with the women there and provide them an early warning.
As a gamer, I find myself stepping up when others can’t, much like Moira does in this situation. “I’m the only troublemaker around,” she declares, “so it seems it’s me who has to take the hit.
The High Commanders throw a party for Lawrence
Once Lawrence has been inaugurated as the High Commander, his colleagues from Gilead convene and discuss arrangements for a celebration following the ceremony.
In the sixth season of The Handmaid’s Tale, we meet Timothy Simons’ character for the first time. Unlike Commander Wharton, who is focused on politics and family matters, this new commander has a taste for nightlife and seems more interested in going out for drinks rather than upholding strict commandments.
At home, Wharton encounters Serena. She’s carrying a pie intended for Rose, who is asleep at the moment. Wharton requests a piece of the pie and a seat, as he too stays put.
Since they’ve settled in New Bethlehem, the duo has grown closer and it’s evident that they hold each other in high regard.
Wharton, a previous member of the Sons of Jacob, often presents stark contrasts in his philosophical views.
Despite his initial reservations regarding the reforms and significant role in establishing Gilead, he expresses approval to Serena for finding her voice and platform.
Referring to Fred Waterford, he tells her, “A better man would’ve encouraged your influence.”
Janine catches up with Lawrence
In Episode 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, we return to June, who is endeavoring to persuade Moira that the mission is too risky. However, much like Luke, Moira seems unresponsive and appears increasingly frustrated with June’s attempts to dictate her actions.
While chatting, Moira begins to print out the employee profiles from Jezebels, and then, unexpectedly, one of the profiles that catches her eye is someone she recognizes: it’s Janine.
The camera shifts to Jezebels, and Thomas’ top leader calls out to Janine, who is also known as Kitty. He publicly belittles her in front of his other commanders, prompting Lawrence to lower his gaze in embarrassment.
He offers to give her to him, and Lawrence consents, allowing him a chance to speak with Janine alone.
Janine finds herself justifiably upset with him due to their recent encounter at Jezebels, yet he points out that given the circumstances, this was his only viable option – it was either this place, a slow demise in the Colonies, or a swift one on the wall.
Lawrence informs Janine that Angela is flourishing well. He hands over one of Angela’s sketches to Janine, assuring her that he will ensure Angela’s safety under all circumstances.
Luke and Moira stand their ground
In the town of New Bethlehem, Rita goes to see Nick and inquires about the safety of returning there. Nick replies, “I believe it is… it’s part of my duties to ensure that it is.
Rita has informed that she intends to remain there until Nick can successfully arrange their permanent escape from Gilead. Nick consents to this plan, acknowledging it might take a year or two. For Rita, this is an obvious choice, as she’s willing to do whatever it takes for her family.
While June finds Ellen, she shares with her the necessity of Ellen visiting Jezebels. Ellen expresses some reservations since Moira had previously volunteered, but June persuades her by arguing that it would be safer for Ellen to go because she has a Commander ally.
Instead of going to discuss something with Luke, June finds herself interrupted when Moira angrily approaches, visibly upset. What ensues is a heated disagreement, during which June hints that Moira and Luke might not be capable of handling the upcoming trial run.
She suggests they join her in Alaska, assuring she’ll manage on her own, but Moira declares, “I’m off to Jezebels. If you want to tag along, great, if not, I’ll be there without you.
Despite the warnings, June persists undeterred. “You’re completely unprepared,” she asserts. “You have no idea how to handle yourself in there, understand? You won’t make it through,” she adds. “Do you really think so little of us?” Moira counters, and then departs.
Now, it’s Luke’s chance to speak up. He proposes that beneath her exterior, June may be hiding a desire to come back and stand up for herself.
He asserts that he has developed this entire strategy himself and intends to drop the explosives at predetermined spots. It’s his opportunity to stand up for Hannah, he explains.
Wharton and Serena grow close
Lawrence keeps his promise later in the day by reading A Little Princess to Angela, an unexpectedly fitting story for the situation.
Similar to Sara from the book, Janine frequently employs her imaginative powers and youthful optimism as a means of coping with inhumane harshness. Her characteristic compassion is often misunderstood as innocence.
It’s clear that both Janine from The Handmaid’s Tale and Sara from A Little Princess have shown extraordinary resilience and elegance in their respective stories.
Transitioning to the next part, the view shifts to Janine. Imprisoned within the gloom of Jezebels, she gazes at Angela’s sketch with a radiant expression of delight.
In the tranquil heart of New Bethlehem, I find myself leisurely walking alongside Wharton and Serena. I can’t help but confess, I did cross paths with her at a grand ball in Washington D.C., long before she became Mrs. Waterford.
Instead of the original passage: He prayed for forgiveness for desiring another man’s wife, but he secretly wished he could be in Fred’s place. Wharton, recognizing it’s better late than never, asks her to join him for a leisurely dance right in the heart of the street.
He asked forgiveness for longing after another man’s spouse, but he couldn’t help but wish he was Fred instead. Wharton, understanding that it’s better to act late than never, proposes a casual dance in the center of the street to her.
The peaceful privacy they shared was disrupted by Aunt Lydia, causing Serena to feel awkward and red-faced. With an overly cheerful tone, Aunt Lydia greeted them with “Good evening.
Luke and June agree to “fight” for Hannah
In the concluding sequence of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 4, Luke and June find themselves in a more peaceful state, leading to an intimate conversation.
Luke proposes, “If we need to enter, let’s do it together. If you’re ready for a battle, let’s fight side by side,” to which June responds, “I’m absolutely up for the fight. After all, Hannah is there too.
She clarifies her actions, emphasizing the challenge of drawing near to Hannah while being powerless to prevent what happened to her.
To be clear, should they return to Alaska to bring up Holly, their hearts would always be tethered to Gilead because they’d remain haunted by the fact that Hannah is still trapped there.
June points out, ‘Regardless of how flawlessly the Mayday plan functions, and I must stress, it won’t, it doesn’t automatically imply we’ll reach her, correct?’ She wants to make sure you understand this.
Luke agrees, “Of course, it’s worth a shot.” Ultimately, they find common ground and end their emotional talk with tender words, “I love you,” before embarking on their rebellion together.
