Luis Tosar Stars in International Trailer for Spanish Amnesia Dramedy ‘Samana Sunrise’: Scooped by FilmSharks (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned moviegoer with a soft spot for Spanish cinema and a knack for uncovering hidden gems, I am genuinely excited about the upcoming release of “Samana Sunrise.” The international cast, coupled with the unique premise of memory loss and rekindled feelings, promises an intriguing blend of drama, romance, and comedy that I can’t wait to witness.

International movie company Filmsharks has acquired the distribution rights for the Spanish comedy-drama “Samana Sunrise,” featuring prominent actor Luis Tosar (“Cell 211,” “Sleep Tight”).

Last week at Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid, FilmSharks successfully charmed exhibitors. They plan to continue this momentum at RioMarket, AFM, and Film Baazar. Universal Pictures is set to debut the movie in Spain on November 8, while Movistar Plus+ has secured second window pay TV and streaming rights for the film.

The comedy “Yo” is helmed by Rafa Cortés and adapted from a play by Jordi Galcerán. It features Spanish actors such as Tosar, Luisa Mayol, Luis Zahera, and Bárbara Santa-Cruz, along with international stars like Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones,” “Gosford Park”) and Alfredo Castro (“The Club,” “Tony Manero”).

In the movie, four friends embark on a Caribbean trip to mark the simultaneous 20-year anniversaries of their relationships. As they catch up, possibly after consuming more drinks than they should have, secrets emerge revealing that the pairings among them almost took a different turn on the night they initially met.

At first, the early admissions are dismissed because, in the past two decades, those initial crushes have become nothing more than memories. However, the story takes an unexpected twist when one of the main characters experiences a hard blow to the head, which causes her memory to rewind back to that first night and her initial feelings towards her best friend’s long-term spouse. This memory wipeout also removes the love she had for her own husband.

The Spanish production was filmed in the Dominican Republic, allowing the actors to spontaneously interact with their surroundings and unexpected occurrences. This approach adds a raw, authentic feel to the movie, harkening back to its theatrical origins.

Guide Rud, Filmsharks CEO and founder, shared with EbMaster: “The film ‘Samana Sunrise’ has multiple dimensions, blending elements of comedy, romance, drama, thriller, and ‘reality shifting.’ We believe that this movie has the potential to become a local success at Universal, but it also has the ability to resonate globally. It stands on its captivating narrative and an outstanding Spanish cast. Furthermore, we anticipate that many production companies will seek the rights for remakes.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that the upcoming film is a joint production between Ron Vino y Miel AIE, A Name Like This, Materia Cinema, Quexito Films, and Federation – a collaboration of Spanish and Dominican studios.
