At the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, Lucy Liu will receive a career achievement award. Known for her memorable roles in “Kill Bill” and “Charlie’s Angels,” she will also be presenting the world premiere of Eric Lin’s film “Rosemead.
In the newly released film “Rosemead,” showcased at the Tribeca Film Festival, Liu transforms into an immigrant widow grappling with personal struggles concerning her son’s mental health. According to Peter Debruge, Chief Film Critic for EbMaster, this film showcases a “career-redefining performance” by Liu that shatters the stereotypical image of action heroines she has portrayed in films like “Charlie’s Angels” and “Kill Bill.” Debruge further commends Liu’s powerful acting, which breaks free from the mold created by her past roles.
Liu’s professional journey kicked off with her groundbreaking performance in “Ally McBeal,” which garnered her both Emmy and SAG nominations. Since then, she has appeared in noteworthy television shows such as “Why Women Kill,” “Elementary,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Star Wars: Visions,” and “A Man in Full.” In addition to acting, Liu is a versatile artist who has directed episodes for Marvel’s “Luke Cage,” “Elementary,” “Why Women Kill,” and “American Born Chinese,” and gained recognition for her documentary short, “Meena,” which focused on human trafficking. Aside from acting and directing, she has taken on the role of a producer for projects like “Freedom’s Fury” and “Redlight.” Recently, she lent her voice and production skills to the Emmy-nominated VR experience “The Pirate Queen,” which is now being developed into a graphic novel.
On August 14, Liu will debut “Rosemead” internationally in the spacious outdoor Piazza Grande venue of Locarno, accompanied by the cast and team. Moreover, there will be a discussion with Liu on stage during the festival, which is renowned as Europe‘s leading independent film event.
In a statement, Giona A. Nazzaro, the head of Locarno, noted that Lucy Liu’s impact on both movies and TV is beyond measurement. Time and again, she demonstrates her skill at reinvention by delivering compelling performances that question traditional norms.
It’s an honor to have Lucy Liu on Piazza Grande, where we’ll showcase ‘Rosemead’, a profoundly impactful project that highlights her continually growing talent. Her bold decisions and pioneering performances continue to amaze viewers and reshape the concept of what it means to be an artist in today’s era,” he commented further.
The 78th edition of Locarno will run Aug. 6-16.
