Lucy Liu Expanding ‘Pirate Queen’ Franchise Into Graphic Novels, Podcast – Global Bulletin

PIRATE PODCAST

As a movie buff with a keen eye for historical and cultural narratives, I must say that the expansion of “Pirate Queen” media universe into graphic novels and podcasts is an exciting development. The story of Cheng Shih, a real-life female pirate from the South China Sea, offers a refreshing take on the often male-dominated genre of pirate tales.

Lucy Liu, along with Singer Studios, is broadening the world of their “Pirate Queen” in the realms of graphic novels and podcasts.

The franchise revolves around re-enacting tales about the formidable female pirate, Cheng Shih, a historical figure who ruled the high seas in the South China Sea during the early 18th century.

The initial launch of this franchise, a virtual reality adventure inspired by Maja Bodenstein’s narrative, received accolades including the Tribeca Storyscapes Award and the Raindance Discovery Award in 2023. At present, it is up for an Emmy nomination within the Outstanding Emerging Media category.

As a passionate movie buff, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming podcast series is masterfully directed by the talented Eloise Singer. The curtain will rise on episode one, available across all major podcast platforms starting September 10th. This first episode promises an exclusive sit-down with none other than Liu himself!

The globaly distributed graphic novel series, set to be released by Andrews McMeel Publishing, could potentially delve into the histories of 17 additional female pirates in the future.

IN MEMORIAM

The Busan International Film Festival is planning a special tribute for the late, talented actor Lee Sun-kyun, who tragically passed away in December under challenging circumstances.

At the upcoming festival, six pieces by the esteemed late actor Lee will be showcased, along with discussions. The event is designed to honor and reflect upon the impressive career of this actor, who has left an indelible mark on the Korean film industry through his dignified and deep performances. This was expressed in a statement released by the festival organizers.

The assortment features films such as “Paju,” helmed by Park Chan-wook, “Our Sunhi,” masterminded by Hong Sang-soo, and “A Hard Day,” produced by Kim Soeng-hun.

Additionally, it will feature an episode from the hit TV show “My Mister,” Bong Joon-ho’s Academy Award-winning film “Parasite,” and Choo Chang-min’s “Land of Happiness” – all released this year posthumously after Lee’s passing. In “Land of Happiness,” Lee plays a righteous soldier who finds himself entangled in a presidential assassination plot.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my production house, Mountain River Films, has sealed a partnership with the Chinese government agency, China Intercontinental Communication Centre.
