Lucy Liu, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Olivia Wilde, Beanie Feldstein and Joanna Calo Award 2024 Grant Recipient of Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program

As a movie critic with over three decades of experience in the industry, I’ve seen my fair share of talented filmmakers and actresses. But let me tell you, the gathering at the New York City cocktail party left me absolutely starstruck. The energy and enthusiasm from Lucy Liu, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Olivia Wilde, Beanie Feldstein, Joanna Calo, and the emerging filmmakers was electrifying!

On a Thursday evening in New York City, Lucy Liu, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Olivia Wilde, Beanie Feldstein, and Joanna Calo convened at a cocktail event to announce the winner of the 2024 Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program grant.

This year’s jury panel, comprising five women, was responsible for evaluating submissions for our annual program that offers industry backing and artistic advancement to female and non-binary filmmakers. Following a rigorous, three-day seminar, Liu, Randolph, Wilde, Feldstein, and Calo announced Sophia Youssef, the writer-director, and Céline Bava-Helms, the producer as the winners of the top prize for their short film titled “Black Shore.

Liu expressed to EbMaster during a cocktail party on the rooftop terrace of the Greenwich Hotel’s Tribeca penthouse that ‘Black Shore’ seemed incredibly ambitious and full of world-building. He also mentioned that it stood out among other projects due to its vastness.

Liu reminisced about the jury’s discussion following the presentations from new filmmakers. “We may have diverse viewpoints,” she noted, “but we shared a common vision. These women are not only powerful and deliberate in their creativity, but they also stand for intention. That’s why I agreed to be involved… It’s about unity and knowing that each of us can assert ourselves independently.

Previously, during a social gathering known as a cocktail party, Jane Fonda – who is part of the Through Her Lens advisory group – shared some exciting news regarding the program’s upcoming plans.

Through Her Lens was established in 2015 with a strong aim to motivate and strengthen the upcoming female narrative creators. Fast forward to today, we’re celebrating our tenth anniversary, continuing the legacy of [the late Tribeca executive vice president] Paula Weinstein who recognized the importance of guidance and meaningful relationships for career advancement in women. She was well aware of the challenging nature of this field. Over the years, amid inflation, strikes, and significant transformations across our industries, the path has become more daunting than ever. With respect to Paula’s memory, I am delighted to reveal that Chanel is generously enhancing the winner’s award and the four additional development funds this year.

Tribeca Studios will fully fund and support the production of ‘Black Shore’. The synopsis for the original short film is: ‘Evangelina, who has returned home to Santorini to care for her ailing mother, finds herself grappling with the possibility that her mother’s lifelong fascination with mythical beasts and an ancestral curse may not be mere folklore, but a chilling prophecy suggesting that some destinies are genetically predetermined.’

Yuseff found inspiration from three relatives who each suffered from distinct genetic diseases, ultimately resulting in the debilitating condition known as locked-in syndrome – a rare case where an individual remains aware yet unable to move or communicate due to total immobility of voluntary muscles.

Youseff shared with EbMaster that for ten years, he and his family had assisted three individuals who were paralyzed, ultimately watching them succumb to their conditions. This personal experience sparked a desire within him to transform the terror of potentially facing a similar fate (given their shared genes) into a compelling narrative. Since he is from Greece, he found the myth of Medusa to be an ideal metaphor for expressing this bodily horror tale based on his experiences.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that not only did “Black Shore” secure its full funding, but the rest of the program participants – “Brace Yourself,” “Copy, Save,” “Haint,” and “Selah” – also received development grants. This means these remarkable projects are one step closer to hitting the silver screen!

I feel privileged to be here amidst the trailblazers of cinema’s future. Witnessing such enchanting craftsmanship was truly an honor,” I expressed to the filmmakers.

As a seasoned movie reviewer, let me tell you, I wholeheartedly concur with Randolph’s sentiments. Each of these young actresses, in my view, is poised for a promising career. Just being part of this project, in my opinion, speaks volumes about their potential.
