In Episode 2 of Season 2 in “The Sandman,” we learn why Lucifer Morningstar chose to abandon Hell, and it’s entirely plausible. Lucifer (portrayed by Gwendoline Christie) is a significant character in Netflix’s fantasy show, alongside Dream (also known as Morpheus), with whom she shares the screen alongside her other Endless siblings. As the captivating ruler of Hell and a fallen angel, Lucifer plays a crucial role in Dream’s story within “The Sandman” since they are depicted as adversaries to one another.
In a surprising twist, the second season of “The Sandman” carries on the tale of Lucifer Morningstar, who was once ruler of Hell but is now eager to embark on a fresh journey. However, events take an interesting turn when it’s unveiled in Season 2, Episode 2 that Lucifer’s retirement plans involve Dream, necessitating his involvement in their future plans.
In the first installment of the last season on Netflix’s “The Sandman,” Morpheus embarks on his journey to rectify past errors, all while carrying a substantial burden that could determine his fate. Tom Sturridge spearheads the show’s ensemble cast, which also includes Umulisa Gahiga, Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman, Boyd Holdbrook, Razane Jammal, and Donna Preston.
Why Lucifer Leaves Hell In The Sandman Season 2
In the second episode of “The Sandman” Season 2, we learn about Lucifer’s decision to abandon his duties in Hell. This choice was prompted by a conversation with Morpheus, where Lucifer confided that he felt exhausted from the constant struggle of maintaining order in Hell.
One aspect of the task involves maintaining Hell within Heaven’s desired parameters, as Lucifer referred to it as “Heaven’s shadow” or “Heaven’s dark counterpart.” After Lucifer’s exit, they freed all the souls confined in the realm, among whom was Dream’s beloved, Nada. They then selected a new leader for the domain.
As a devoted cinephile, I was astounded when Lucifer unexpectedly handed over the reins of Hell to none other than Morpheus. This decision not only saddled him with the responsibility of managing the underworld but also made him a prime target for anyone harboring ambitions to rule Hell. Among these power-hungry individuals are Azazel, Merkin, the Norse deity Odin (alongside his sons Thor and Loki), and the ominous and malevolent organization known as Chaos.
Lucifer clarified that they appointed Morpheus as their choice because they deemed it too risky to entrust the underworld to anyone else. With his rise to leadership, Hell now grants Morpheus unrivaled authority across all realms, yet this position has made him a formidable foe in the eyes of other powerful entities.
Dream comes to understand that the Hell Lucifer bestowed upon him wasn’t a generous gesture. Rather, it served as a form of retaliation. In doing so, Lucifer hinted that Dream’s existence was about to become challenging.
The Sandman Reveals What’s Next for Dream After Becoming Hell’s Leader
Following his acquisition of the key to the underworld, Morpheus opted to organize a harmonious feast to identify the upcoming ruler of this domain, as he wished to avoid bearing that responsibility.
Alternatively, rather than waiting, Azazel chooses a direct approach, menacingly demanding the key from Morpheus and warning that if he doesn’t comply, he will immediately end Nada’s life.
In episode 3 of “The Sandman” season 2, it was disclosed that Morpheus had devised a strategy. He elected to hand over the key to Hell to the angels with the intention of preserving the realm’s protection and stability.
Although Azazel felt furious about Dream’s choice, Morpheus exploited his Dreaming domain, capturing the impulsive demon and safeguarding Nada. However, she eventually left him behind, disillusioned by his rash actions of sending her to Hell during Season 1.
Morpheus found relief from the dilemma of ruling over Hell, yet his troubles persisted, escalating significantly due to subsequent events involving his son, Orpheus, which earned him the title of public enemy by a much greater danger (explore further about the intricate Sandman family lineage here).
