Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer,’ Starring Daniel Craig, Acquired by Mubi for U.K., Mexico, Germany and More

As a cinephile who’s seen more films than I care to remember, I must admit that the acquisition of “Queer” by Mubi has piqued my interest significantly. Luca Guadagnino’s unique style and the stellar cast led by Daniel Craig promise an intriguing cinematic experience.

Mubi purchased “Queer,” the psychedelic take on the William S. Burroughs book by director Luca Guadagnino, from various territories, following its premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival.

In a further demonstration of its growing influence in the art-house scene, the rapidly expanding distributor, streamer, and production company (which seems to be on a continuous spree of festival acquisitions) has secured all distribution rights for the highly anticipated film starring Daniel Craig, across various regions such as the U.K., Ireland, Latin America, Mexico, Germany & Austria, Benelux, Spain, Canada, Turkey, and India. For Italy, it acquired rights except for theatrical and home video. A24 had previously purchased the film for distribution in the U.S. The deal was brokered between The Veterans and Mubi.

The film titled “Queer” received favorable responses at Venice, taking place in 1940s Mexico City and focusing on William Lee (Craig), an American living alone within a small American community. However, the appearance of Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a young scholar, sparks William to forge a significant relationship. The cast includes Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Andra Ursuta, Michael Borremans, and David Lowery as well.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming movie we’ve all been waiting for is set to make its grand debut in the United States at the New York Film Festival and in the UK at the BFI London Film Festival. Keep your eyes peeled, as Mubi will be revealing their release plans soon!

The movie known as ‘Queer’ was jointly created by Fremantle, Fremantle North America, Lorenzo Mieli through The Apartment (a subsidiary of Fremantle Group), and Guadagnino under his Frenesy Film Company. They worked together with Cinecitta and Frame by Frame on this project. Financing for the film was provided by Fremantle Group.

The movie is now part of an expanding collection of prominent films scheduled for Mubi, a platform that drew significant attention this year with Coralie Fargeat’s gory and intense body-horror film “The Substance,” starring Demi Moore. After securing the film prior to Cannes where it received the best screenplay award, it turned out to be Mubi’s most successful release ever and its first wide U.S. launch as they expanded their North American operations.

Over the past ten days, I’ve been captivated by the remarkable success of “The Substance” in its theatrical run. This week, it raked in $13.6 million across its territories, with many markets witnessing a surge at the box office during its second weekend due to strong word-of-mouth buzz. Incredibly, this film has become Mubi’s most successful title ever! Currently, it ranks second in the U.K. box office, trailing only “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” Interestingly, I’ve heard that Vue, one of the country’s largest cinema chains, now holds the majority marketshare, indicating that the R-rated film is starting to attract mainstream audiences.
