Love on the Spectrum Stars ‘Disgusted’ by RFK Jr.’s Comments on Autism

During a press conference held on April 16th, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made controversial statements concerning autism. He stated, “These are individuals who will never contribute to society by paying taxes, holding jobs, playing sports like baseball, or writing poetry.” He further promised to identify the cause of autism by September, possibly through creating a registry for those diagnosed with autism. However, members from the autistic community, including some featured on Netflix’s Love on the Spectrum, have voiced their disapproval of RFK Jr.’s remarks, as they themselves have had romantic experiences and achieved accomplishments that contradict his statement.

Dani Bowman

Dani Bowman, an animator featured in season 3 of “Love on the Spectrum,” expressed her disapproval to NewsNation about RFK Jr.’s comments. She stated that autistic individuals share the same aspirations, dreams, and even awkward dating experiences as anyone else. It is misleading and untrue to stereotype that we cannot work, date, or contribute to society. I, Dani Bowman, have a job, pay taxes, have dated, and hold a master’s degree.

James B. Jones

In Season 3, James B. Jones, now a 37-year-old adult, countered RFK Jr.’s views on the independence of people with autism through a TikTok video. He emphasized his abilities, stating that he has been driving since he was 17 and has held a full-time job with benefits since 2017. He also noted that he manages all his own expenses. Jones argued that much of his success came from a more accommodating world towards neurodivergence, rather than attempting to “cure” it. He expressed gratitude for the special education program that aided his development and growth into the person he is today, suggesting that without this education, his current circumstances might be very different. This discussion is particularly relevant given the Trump administration’s proposed elimination of the Department of Education.
