Two days ago, Yulissa Escobar from Love Island USA departed the villa. If you haven’t been online recently, this might surprise you as there was minimal explanation on the show about her departure. To bring you up to speed: Shortly after it was announced that she would be a cast member, clips from a podcast emerged where Yulissa used racial slurs. Fans threatened to vote her out instantly. After leaving the island, Yulissa issued an apology statement on Instagram on June 6th, acknowledging her use of a racial slur and its harmful impact. “In those clips, I used a word that I should never have used – a racial slur. I used it unknowingly, not fully comprehending the weight, history, or pain associated with it,” Yulissa wrote. “I wasn’t trying to be offensive or hurtful, but I now understand that intent doesn’t justify impact. And the impact of that word is genuine. It’s linked to generations of trauma, and it is not mine to use.” Prior to her removal from the show, Yulissa was partnered with Ace, a 22-year-old Black TikTok livestreamer; he is currently single and may find a less contentious islander to pair up with.
