Love Island Recap: Mean Girls

Everything was progressing smoothly before we reached an incredibly competitive game, reminiscent of a game played at a social gathering hosted by Heather Gay from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. It seemed like we were reconnecting with the essence of Love Island, mainly due to our creative expressions of intimacy returning. Cierra and Nic have been engaging in intimate moments quite frequently, and Cierra now describes it as her “experience.” This experience was notably longer than their previous one, which notoriously lasted 30 seconds, according to Cierra’s conversation with Iris one morning. They took breaks for sustenance along the way. If you understand Cierra’s hint, they consumed burgers and hot dogs. And let’s just say, the trip culminated at a waterfall. Furthermore, this time around, intimacy led to a romantic bike ride, which concluded with Nic proposing: Will you agree to be officially exclusive with me? Which is the closest to being married that can occur in the villa.

In simpler terms, the ancient tales of ‘Love Island’ also discuss unrequited love and men who are too timid to confess their true feelings, waiting until a more appealing contender, known as a “bombshell,” enters the scene, compelling them to make a move. This scenario is reminiscent of Taylor, Clarke, and Olandria. Olandria has been leaving flirtatious photos in Taylor’s bed, an action that seems too low for her stature, given that it’s hard not to cringe at the thought of mentioning it. Taylor appears to be more drawn towards Clarke. (It’s important to note that I don’t expect Taylor and Clarke’s relationship to last beyond the villa. Taylor dreams of a contemporary, minimalist home, while Taylor seems intent on living in a horse stable.)

Essentially, my point is that the significant restructuring at Casa in 2025 achieved its purpose by instilling a sense of dread among these Islanders and putting them back on a familiar path. However, prior to this event, there was the influence of Nicolandria.

Without their fellow Islanders aware, Nic and Olandria have been arranged on a date and are required to pair up with each other to leave the villa, similar to forcing two Barbie dolls together for a kiss but with real individuals. This bold attempt at pleasing Nicolandria fans online surprisingly succeeds. Pushed out of their comfort zones in their relationships, Nic and Olandria embark on a joint quest, aiming to rescue Love Island USA’s seventh season from itself.

Nic thinks, “This is fantastic! I can finally pursue my clear feelings for Olandria without Cierra’s presence making me feel remorseful.” Olandria muses, “This is wonderful! I just have to sleep next to Nic for a bit, and I get to reunite with Taylor, who must be yearning for me greatly at this moment.” Regardless, they toast with Champagne, then sneak back into the main villa while everyone else is asleep, only to delightfully shock them upon waking up.

Regrettably, Olandria’s joyful moments come to an end as the day unfolds, leaving her in disbelief over Taylor and Clarke’s interactions. Essentially, when confronted with the stark truth of her lack of bond with Taylor, Olandria resorts to denial. It’s hard for her to accept that Taylor seems more attached to Clarke after three days than he has been with her in three weeks. Taylor and Clarke are quite affectionate, a fact we all know is a recipe for short-lived relationships, according to Olandria. At the height of her self-deception, Olandria tells Clarke directly, “I’m proud of Taylor for using you to test our connection.” She believes that Taylor values the consistent effort she puts into their relationship. However, what Olandria fails to understand is that Taylor prefers Clarke because there’s no effort required at all.

As Olandria ponders if Taylor still belongs to her, Nic is flirtatiously dancing without a shirt in an attempt to catch her attention. With longing gazes directed towards Clarke and Taylor, who seem to be growing closer across the villa, Olandria reflects on the advantages of starting a relationship as friends. Meanwhile, Nic playfully raises his eyebrows and asks, “Friends like me? Do you think I’m attractive too? You are the most stunning woman I have ever laid eyes upon. Would you care to kiss?” Eventually, Olandria diverts her gaze from Taylor and Clarke’s playful interaction and contemplates giving it a try. The passionate kiss between Nicolandria in Soul Ties suggests there may be sparks between them, but by morning, their connection fades away. Olandria informs Nic that she doesn’t feel any romantic feelings for him. Nic responds with something like, “Oh yeah, absolutely, I don’t either. My thoughts were preoccupied with Cierra and Taylor anyway. Yes, you two are perfect together.” The scene then transitions to Taylor intertwining his fingers in Clarke’s hair.

The advantage of the Nicolandria flop lies in creating the most impactful emotional climax at Casa Amor, which is the reunion between Nic and Cierra. At Casa, Cierra barely invests more than 40% of her feelings into Elan, and this often causes her to break down in tears in the makeup room. She’s reluctant to even kiss him outside a challenge. However, inside a challenge is an exception, as that was the former rule.

Now, all the new couples have gathered at the main villa, and tears are flowing down Cierra’s cheeks as she realizes that Nic was the one who got dumped. It’s heartwarming, isn’t it? And then Nic, wearing his JNCO jeans, confidently walks in, and Cierra immediately runs into his arms. He tells her, “I missed you,” before pulling her close for a kiss on the lips. Huda describes it as “watching a romantic comedy or something.” For now, at least, I truly believe in these love-struck individuals. Love Island is definitely making a comeback, I think. We come to this place seeking magic. Moving on…

After the Casa shuffle, things are mainly about reorganizing. Taylor selects Clarke, leaving Olandria and Amaya stunned, with Amaya expressing her dismay by exclaiming “Taylor!” Instead of the anticipated reaction, Ace’s choice between Chelley and Coco, both wearing similar yellow outfits, including a flower accessory in their side-parted hair, is met with less excitement than he expected. Chelley chooses Ace, feeling secure because Chris, her connection from Casa, remains due to Huda picking Chris.

Despite its effectiveness, the Casa Amor remix didn’t resolve all our issues. For one, we’re now overloaded with Islanders, and it’s impossible to care about them all. I’m not familiar with Gracyn, for instance. As for Bryan, I apologize for his situation.

Secondly, no amount of remixing can undo the path Ace and Chelley have chosen. If Ace had focused more on establishing his boundaries in the beginning, he might face fewer complications now. The past few days have been filled with discussions about lines and limits, but it seems that even Chelley herself is unsure where they lie. All Chelley can say for certain is that Huda overstepped those boundaries.

Today, Ace is experiencing heavy rainfall during the pulse test, which Chelley finds disrespectful towards Huda, given their unique relationship dynamics. However, it’s unclear what exactly this relationship entails. For a long time, they’ve only shared half a bed with each other and are known for being “open.” In this villa, unless partners have explicitly defined boundaries with each other and the rest, any connection is fair game during a challenge. It’s not appropriate to suddenly impose an in-challenge boundary on your primary relationship when you still maintain a secondary one. This becomes more problematic when your secondary connection has moved out of your periphery towards someone else.

Huda feels terrible about herself following the challenge, but Chelley won’t accept Huda’s apology at this time or in the future because it was a serious violation of their sisterhood bond. In fact, it seems unfair to say this, but if you truly feel that way, why not date Ace instead? That would make it clear to Huda that Ace is off-limits, allowing her to continue her relationship with Chris. However, Chris serves as Chelley’s emotional backup, and Huda can’t have him either.

Regardless of its futility, everything seems to be spiraling around the incident known as “twerk-gate.” The girls have banded together to support Chelley, leaving Huda feeling isolated and only comforted by Chris. Interestingly, this situation has brought them closer. While Chelley is trying to establish new boundaries with Ace that allow her to develop a relationship with Chris but prevent Ace from misbehaving during challenges, Chris is consoling Huda, wiping away her tears. Chris isn’t deterred by the drama surrounding pancakes or Huda’s daughter. He admires Huda’s humor and aims to help her learn to accept love from others. In essence, he’s playing with her emotions. They share a deep kiss in the speakeasy.

According to Chelley’s account, it seemed that Huda had led her to believe Chris was there for Chelley, not herself. Darling, my dear, pumpkin, it appears Chris isn’t your guy.

It seems like it’s time for Chellay to draft a harsh message for Huda, asking her to read it out loud in front of everyone. They’ve renamed this game from “Organized Bullying” to “Standing on Business,” which feels odd. In the notes penned by Chellay, Cierra, and Olandria, Huda is accused of two felony violations of the Girl Code: one for dancing with Ace, and another for taking Chris. Chellay serves as the lead prosecutor in this case, with Olandria acting as her key witness, revealing to the entire group that Huda kissed Chris and was seen dancing with a suspicious character. It’s questionable whether Olandria needed to disclose information Huda shared in confidence, but she did so nonetheless. Huda claims innocence, arguing that a girl shouldn’t be penalized for kissing a man she likes. When Chris testifies, Chellay and Cierra suggest he’s with Huda only to secure his position in the villa, leading to an awkward moment where Chris has to clarify that his actions aren’t driven by loyalty to Chellay. “I have feelings for Huda,” Chris declares. There is no crime being committed here, Your Honor! This trial appears to be a sham!

Moving on, there’s more conflict. Austin takes a low jab at Amaya, suggesting she cries too easily, which is then followed by criticism from Ace and Zak-With-a-K. “I guess I can’t be a sensitive gangster,” Amaya replies with tears. Ace and Austin clash for supremacy. Ace comes out on top. Cierra is challenged to explain her decision to end things with Hannah, by Pepe who admits he still has feelings for her. In the end, Taylor must account for his recent actions, and it’s fascinating to see Olandria finally let her anger show. “I can’t find the words for how angry I’ve been,” she says. “You didn’t say a word! Girl gives you three days of attention, and you go!” Do you feel a chill? I do. Furthermore, it forces Taylor to admit, “I choose Clarke,” which seems to be the best choice for everyone.

This version maintains the original’s tone and essence while making it easier to read and understand for a wider audience.

Now, we’ll be on tenterhooks as the jury (America) casts its vote (decides on their preferred Islanders). After that, we should find out who is the audience’s favorite (the girls’ girl) and who might be seen as less popular (the mean girl).
