Love Island: Beyond the Villa Series-Premiere Recap: They Came There For Love

In simpler terms,

It seems clear to me that the background music for reality TV shows can strongly suggest the program’s overall tone. For instance, the theme for “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” hints at a potentially toxic mix of feminism and controversy. The themes for “The Real Housewives,” regardless of the franchise, often create a sense of calm before the chaos. The original “Love Island” has an upbeat, flirty vibe that might remind you of the Stanford Prison Experiment. However, “Beyond The Villa” seems to have a similar ring tone as its dating show precursor but with a slightly off-putting twist – like Wario compared to Mario. Although this could potentially be intriguing, I’m not yet fully convinced by it.

To ensure a lifestyle spinoff (not related to competition) is self-sufficient, it must establish its unique identity. At peak performance, spinoffs surpass the original series and appear refreshingly novel. They move past catering to fans and develop distinct themes. For instance, “Vanderpump Rules” thrived by focusing on fresh chaos instead of serving “RHOBH” superfans who were already satiated with Lisa Vanderpump. A spinoff necessitates extra dimensions, such as new characters or deeper emotional nuances. Consider “The Hills” without Heidi Montag, or “VPR” limited to only Lisa, Ken, and Scheana. Successful spinoffs like “Beyond the Villa” require their own unique elements, otherwise they may feel like an extended reunion that could have been a podcast.

My expectations for this show are quite high as I truly want it to succeed. It seems to have all the elements required for a full-course meal (a charming cast, women who genuinely get along, at least three non-awful male characters, intriguing topics like the effects of sudden fame and the essence of reality TV, among others). However, there’s a concern that we might end up with just a ham and cheese snack instead. So here goes my recap…

A year has passed since the Love Island season six cast departed their villa, now residing in Los Angeles – a city that feels more like a temporary stop for many, reminiscent of the cookie-cutter apartments seen on ‘Love is Blind’. This doesn’t fill me with hope about the show’s long-term prospects. On a hotel rooftop, JaNa, Kenny, and Serena are catching up. Kordell, who’s busy filming for Keke Palmer’s TV network, will maintain a friendly role in their group. I can sense that Kordell might emerge as the winner if there’s indeed a ‘Beyond the Villa’. Meanwhile, JaNa and Kenny are navigating their long-distance relationship, having spent eight months apart. Leah and Miguel drop by from Calabasas, and Kenny seems to be breaking the fourth wall already, sharing whispers like “I told you that off-camera”.

In another rooftop setting, Kendall, Connor, Liv, and Kaylor gather together. Kendall encourages them to mimic a gaze as they toast glasses, reminiscent of a fraternity party in 2014. Kaylor frequently uses the term “hot girl summer” without any hint of sarcasm. Liv suggests they recreate a move from the trendy restaurant, Catch, or perhaps she’s referring to the exclusive atmosphere it represents. This group immediately gives off a vibe that may make viewers uneasy. Additionally, Liv is dating someone new whom Kendall has met, but Kaylor has yet to meet, so expect a rollercoaster ride throughout the season as we navigate the complexities of friendship dynamics.

Discussing the upcoming “Love Island” Summer Party, each rooftop voices their thoughts. JaNa harbors tension towards Connor, questioning aloud, “Why must we be friends when there are 7 billion people in the world?” This sentiment echoes a broader query about the show itself. The explanation lies in contractual agreements! Connor seeks to mend fences with JaNa. Kaylor is on edge at the prospect of encountering ex Aaron since the reunion, as she’s yet to forgive him for lying about kissing Daniela.

Where have we found Aaron lately? He’s opted for an off-the-grid life! He deactivated his social media accounts, adopted a puppy, and spent a good amount of time with his brother in the woods. No matter one’s opinion of this individual, these actions are quite understandable for someone who has just finished appearing on national television, especially considering the negative impact shows like Love Island can have on their participants. Currently, Aaron is residing in Venice and engaging in activities such as surfing, consuming large amounts of raw celery, and discussing depression with Connor without explicitly mentioning the term “depression.” Connor reveals that he’s seeing someone new but remains secretive about her identity (much like Liv hiding the identity of her non-athlete athlete partner), a behavior that won’t be tolerated on a lifestyle reality show.

At their corporate housing in West Hollywood, Kaylor video calls her father to update him on her current struggles. She needs to meet Aaron for the first time and is also having a falling out with her best friend Liv. Liv invited Kaylor to her boyfriend’s birthday party, then abruptly canceled it, only for Kaylor to find out from Kendall’s Snapchat that everyone attended without her the next day. This led to a few minutes of me being puzzled by adults using Snapchat in the year 2025, before I snapped back to reality when Kaylor’s dad advised her to treat Liv as if she were a colleague. It’s worth noting that Kaylor is twenty-three years old.

In a soothing environment, Kenny discards JaNa’s waste bins. Although they don’t share a home, they reside in adjacent apartments as an experiment to gauge if they can manage shared life. JaNa intends to monitor Aaron at the gathering since he has been through hardships and deserves forgiveness. However, this act of concern does not extend to Connor. JaNa instructs Kenny on how to steer clear of her adversary because she can’t stand her man fraternizing with the enemy.

On their way to Love Island’s Summer Bash, Connor puts on a knitted version of the regular Foot Locker staff attire and discusses his issues with Kenny being blocked. Miguel sports a sign of respect for his wife, talks about horseback riding, and generally keeps to himself. The situation between Liv and Kendall remains unclear as they refer to each other as siblings, but it’s evident there’s some sort of connection. The production team seems to be building suspense, though this might just be for dramatic effect. Kaylor continually refers to Liv as her “sister,” much like a boss who frequently declares the workplace as one big “family.” Liv assures Kendall that she has no issues with anyone, despite Kaylor sharing several instances of conflicts with viewers. The song “Girl, So Confusing” by Charli XCX starts playing in the background. Since Beyond the Villa inherited the music budget from Love Island, we get to hear it.

At the Love Island Summer Party™, everyone is snapping pictures in front of a branded backdrop. The step-and-repeat is swamped with photos! This event is attended by many attractive singles and non-singles. If Peacock aims to kickstart a broader Love Island universe with interconnected seasons, they should consider actions like equipping Cely with a microphone and providing viewers who missed the pre-Ariana era of this franchise with a recap.

Ah, here we go! Jana indulges in a burger, keeping Kenny from patting Connor on the back. There’s no actual pat, but they exchange a few words. Leah takes us back nine months, when they dated for just two days, and now, happily paired, she urges us to let go of this past. However, this rational approach may not fit this series, as it thrives on quick escalations to provoke post-villa discord.

Kaylor has been making an effort, with the producers supporting her all along. When she mustered up the nerve, she confronted Aaron saying, “I’ve had enough of you,” followed by an awkward silence. Keep in mind, she’s only 23 years old! Aaron admitted he had a drink after six months of sobriety. Phew, let’s get this back on track. Things aren’t looking good. They reminisced about their parents forcing their social media content on them, which serves as a green light for you to cut ties with your parents if they ever do the same. Aaron acknowledged his mistakes in gaslighting and manipulating Kaylor, and she wasn’t pleased but responded with words about learning to assert herself and promising to keep things civil moving forward.

Later on, she uses her recently acquired assertiveness to handle a dispute with her friend Liv. The issues between Kaylor and Liv currently consist of three main points:

1. Kaylor feeling left out when Kendall was invited to Liv’s boyfriend’s birthday party instead of herself.
2. A misunderstanding about a shared camera, where Liv took the camera without telling Kaylor and lied about it.
3. Some disagreements regarding personal style or glamour aspects.

I’ll try to break it down further for easier understanding:
1) Kaylor felt excluded when Kendall was invited to Liv’s boyfriend’s party but not herself.
2) There was an incident where they were supposed to share a free camera, but Liv took the camera without telling Kaylor and lied about it.
3) They have some disagreements on matters related to style or glamour.

My preferred choice out of the given passage would be:

The final one is my favorite. It’s straightforward (without involving any specific man, Snapchat, or complexities of a business partnership) while also representing the core issue. Kaylor became upset when Liv claimed she wouldn’t get dressed up, yet arrived at the bar glamorously. Liv then reminded Kaylor that they were appearing on national television, and brought up an instance where Kaylor didn’t inform Liv about a spray tan session. They argued back and forth, expanding to other subjects, and it became quite chaotic. If these women could just have an honest conversation about whether they genuinely like each other and what the term “friend” signifies to them, all their problems would be resolved. It’s painfully reminiscent of middle school drama to witness two friends having such differing perspectives on their friendship. Kaylor aspires for her and Liv to resemble the Powerpuff Girls, but that’s not happening. I am confident that Leah, Serena, and JaNa will never quarrel about trivial matters like makeup and social media platforms. They aren’t leveraging their friendship to mask personal insecurities, which is evident to anyone observing. In any case, Kaylor doesn’t care about public opinion and invites people to dislike her if they wish!

For the remainder of the season, Kaylor is planning on carrying on with her attempts at a hot girl summer. The baby dolls might make an occasional exit from the villa. JaNa still desires shared living arrangements. Ariana Madix is considering another reality TV show for her resume. Will this mix result in an engaging television production? With great anticipation, we’ll have to find out.
