At times, life seems to grant you exactly what you desire – like getting an ice cream loaded with extra goodies or finding an empty seat on a long flight. However, once obtained, these things might turn out to be more complex than initially perceived. To put it another way, the profound exploration into influencer dynamics we’re delving into this week on Beyond The Villa is certainly intriguing, but also distressingly real. Witnessing the cast members grapple with the burdens and monotony of their chosen spotlight isn’t exactly a light-hearted summer adventure. Yet, I must admit, I have a fascination for transformation processes. Ideally, this season culminates in at least half the cast receiving flip phones, embarking on an off-camera camping trip, and breaking free from their parasocial careers. However, as poet laureate Addison Rae once said, “Fame is a gun.” So I’m not expecting miracles to happen anytime soon.
In my latest review, we pick up right where we last left off, with the JaNa-orchestrated conversation between Liv and Kaylor trying to mend their friendship fray. Frankly, I’m not all that invested in them rehashing old issues, but boy, does JaNa manage to pique my interest! She whips out a travel pack of Nutter Butters from her bag, and proceeds to top her banana with these bite-sized delights. This audacious act at a restaurant is pure culinary and comedic brilliance! I can’t help but wonder if she’ll soon land herself a Nutter Butter brand ambassadorship.
On an unrelated note, Liv invites Kaylor to her housewarming party, and they both decide it’s time to move past their differences. Let’s see how this unfolds in the next episode!
While all the boys engage in outdoor pursuits, Kenny and Miguel opt for hiking, sharing their fondness for Los Angeles as it mirrors the bustling cityscape in Grand Theft Auto. However, Kenny declined Connor’s invitation to surf, choosing to maintain distance with JaNa, which leaves one wondering if he might not care for Connor at all. Miguel persistently advises Kenny to follow the relationship progression and move in with JaNa, employing various water metaphors such as testing and jumping in throughout his discourse.
In the real ocean, Connor, Aaron, and Aaron’s brother, Danny, decide to surf. Since Danny is visiting from the UK, he’s keen on tasting an American classic – “sweet potato casserole with marshmallows.” Finding such a dish in Venice might be quite challenging. Connor thinks Kendall will surely want a TikTok video featuring Aaron at Liv’s housewarming party. Despite my experience with reality TV, I still prefer my stars to be a bit naive about social media but excel on television. Aaron seems to share the same sentiment, as he finds the idea of doing TikTok dances embarrassing and says, “Your real friends are the people you never post with.” He believes it’s a sign of true friendship to spend an entire day just hanging out with your actual buddies.
Apologetically, I must confess that this redemption storyline persists in resonating with me! There’s an allure to someone refusing to adhere to the conventional reality TV script, while simultaneously displaying a complex and messy persona. It evokes memories of Mary Cosby in her later years, as Aaron follows suit by cracking a questionable joke about Kenny’s control and then grumbling to Danny about Kaylor exploiting his nonsensical words as a weapon. This happens right after some candid admissions about his struggles with commitment – demonstrating that he has depth and complexity. In simpler terms, this character is multifaceted.
In a restaurant in Hollywood, Kendall, Kaylor, and Caley enjoy an evening meal. Kaylor’s past partner, Kaleb, unexpectedly appears, adding to the possibility of a typo in this narrative. Two acquaintances of Kendall, who manage her as an influencer, also join them. Kaylor expresses her affection for Nashville and suggests that if she moved there with her long-time friend Caley, she would be much more content. However, she finds herself seated next to a man from Montana, sporting a tank top and branded shoulder, complaining about his day. Kaylor admits that her romantic life has been tumultuous before the villa and remains so, echoing Albert Einstein’s thought on insanity being the act of repeating the same actions and anticipating different outcomes.
As we move forward, I find myself reflecting on the various couples out there. Leah takes Miguel to Venice for the first time, and he reassures her about the power of positive thinking in the face of health worries. On the other hand, JaNa snacks on seaweed and creates content with Kenny, unaware that he’s oblivious to her favorite perfume (Prada Intense) and her unique color preference for neon pink and white. This situation makes me ponder if many adults even have a favorite color, let alone one their partner could recite off the cuff. They continue discussing their followings, with Kenny boasting about his 700,000 followers who appreciate him for his personality, silliness, and love for Katy Perry. In 2025? This revelation might just transform JaNa’s dream vacation destination into one that doesn’t include Kenny.
Later, we see a fleeting moment with Kordell, who’s preparing to travel to Atlanta for a month. He carries Milo the cat in a backpack and stops by Serena’s apartment. She wonders aloud, “Why is he so large and sleek?”, a question that many cat owners might ask. Wrapped in a blanket, she becomes a bit apprehensive as Milo performs regular cat antics. It seems like a simple fix if Serena were to spend just half an hour of her usual screen time learning about feline behavior from Jackson Galaxy’s YouTube channel dedicated to cats.
Before Liv’s housewarming event, everyone prepares themselves. Kenny displays his muscles in front of the mirror. JaNa styles her hair. Leah and Miguel aimlessly roam around HomeGoods as a way to cope after a biopsy. Stars, they’re just like us! Kaylor discusses with Caley her anxiety about attending Liv’s. She mentions that she only intends to greet people because if they don’t interact, nothing will change. She complains about how “friendships aren’t supposed to be difficult,” but isn’t a friendship also a relationship based on mutual concern, effort, and openness? It seems strange to watch all these mental acrobatics instead of Kaylor simply going home to spend time with Caley or pursue her master’s degree, as she had planned before Love Island brought her into the spotlight.
It seems that Kaylor has been longing for something, and Liv’s housewarming party kicks off like any other event approved by production. JaNa dons a leather mini dress and indulges in a brownie. Kendall maintains a smug expression while causing chaos, inviting Kaleb and then casually mentioning he’s dining with another woman instead – leaving Kaylor disappointed. A friend mentions the expensive $25 Haley Bieber smoothie from Erewhon. There’s even a bartender on the rooftop. The evening unfolds like a typical Hollywood scene until Aaron arrives.
Initially, he manages to convince Kenny to acknowledge his longing for his previous job in tech sales, as it offered more mental stimulation and satisfaction compared to influencing. This is significant, given the nature of his former profession. Following this, Liv expresses her dissatisfaction with living in a city that creates a time zone barrier between her and her friends and family, making regular communication challenging.
Later on, an unexpected shift occurs. The plan is to turn these conversations into a production, but the material remains largely unchanged. The footage being referred to here is a complete romantic comedy scene, one that boasts more intricacy and liveliness than usual in shows like Love Island. The entire piece can be likened to Emily Henry’s screenwriting style reimagining The Truman Show.
Following his refusal of a drink, Aaron inquires about Kaylor’s wellbeing. She responds gratefully but admits that she finds her current life less fulfilling compared to her past, expressing deep sadness. They both share their dislike for Los Angeles, finding it impersonal and dehumanizing, with people merely moving them around like puzzle pieces. Aaron then paints a vivid metaphor, likening family to tree roots, acquaintances to branches that offer support but should not be relied upon too heavily, and superficial pursuits or distractions to leaves. This scene starkly contrasts with JaNa and Kendall debating their work ethic and Kenny producing content in another room.
Kaylor admits that she’s been keeping one particular blue Zara shirt of Aaron’s at her place, which she uses for sleeping – not in a strange manner, but because it’s comfortable enough to serve as a sleepwear. Aaron remarks on the odd appearance of her footwear, then assists in removing them while they sit on the rooftop, discussing their desire for privacy and being able to enjoy such moments without the presence of cameras.
In simpler terms, I don’t easily get carried away. But when Kaylor expresses feelings for Aaron that she perhaps shouldn’t have, or when Aaron playfully warns her not to keep his hoodie because it’s the only clean sweater he has left? When he mentions abstaining from sexual activity since they last met and plans for a 12-month celibacy streak, then proposes a game of paddle tennis? When Kaylor wonders if he’s asking her out, and he gives a slight nod in response?
Apologies for the enthusiasm, but let me clarify: Although it seems unlikely that these individuals would be compatible for a long-term relationship, the editing in this scene is exceptional. I believe Netflix should consider hiring this editor for their future romantic comedies. This scene is what makes romance such a popular genre – it’s why people tune into reality dating shows. Experiencing a hint of emotion from a brief reality TV moment can feel a bit awkward and cheesy, but in this case, I don’t mind! In today’s world, I’ll take any small moments of joy whenever they come along.
Alright, the serious part is over. Catch you next week as we dive into another installment about the social media fame on Love Island. I’ve heard we’ll be visiting a roller rink then!
