Lou Dobbs, Conservative Pundit and Former CNN Host, Dies at 78

As a dedicated cinephile with a deep appreciation for the history of broadcast journalism, I am saddened to learn of the passing of Lou Dobbs at the age of 78. Dobbs was not just a commentator or author, but a true pioneer in the industry who graced our screens for decades, most notably on CNN and Fox Business Network with his iconic show “Lou Dobbs Tonight.”

The renowned conservative commentator and former host of “Lou Dobbs Tonight” on CNN and later Fox Business Network, Lou Dobbs, passed away at the age of 78.

“With deep sadness, we share the news of the demise of ‘The Great Lou Dobbs.’ He fought valiantly until the end, prioritizing his faith, family, and country. Lou’s impact as a patriot and esteemed American will continue to resonate. Kindly keep his beloved wife Debu, children, and grandchildren in your thoughts during this difficult time.”

Dobbs was a commentator, author and host of “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” which originally premiered on CNN in 1980 as “Moneyline.” Dobbs anchored the series and served as CNN’s chief economics correspondent, later taking on the role of executive vice president at the cable news channel.

Over time, the Moneyline show transformed into a more subjective broadcast and was subsequently renamed to Lou Dobbs Moneyline, then later to Lou Dobbs Tonight. Dobbs hosted this program from 2003 until his departure from CNN in 2009. In 2011, he joined Fox Business Network and launched a new version of Lou Dobbs Tonight. However, this show was canceled in 2021 due to defamation lawsuits against Fox following controversial comments made by Dobbs and other hosts. Dobbs was also involved in the Dominion Voting Systems lawsuit, which resulted in a $787.5 million settlement for Fox. Lou Dobbs Tonight resurfaced as a streaming program on Lindell TV in January 2024.

Donald Trump commemorated Dobbs, who showed staunch support for the former president, on Truth Social. “The Great Lou Dobbs has just passed away — A friend, and truly incredible Journalist, Reporter, and Talent,” Trump wrote. “He understood the World, and what was ‘happening,’ better than others. Lou was unique in so many ways, and loved our Country. Our warmest condolences to his wonderful wife, Debi, and family. He will be greatly missed!”

Born in Childress County, Texas, in 1945, Dobbs studied at Harvard University before starting his journalism career with Arizona’s KBLU in 1970 as a police and fire reporter. He later transitioned into TV news in Phoenix, and subsequently moved to Seattle.

Starting in 1980, he began working for CNN, holding prominent roles within the cable network up until 2009. During Barack Obama’s presidency, Dobbs advocated for Birtherism – an unfounded belief that Obama was not born in the United States. He held staunchly anti-immigration beliefs and remained a supporter of Trump until his death, frequently expressing this support on social media hours prior to his passing.

“Fox News Media expressed great sadness over the death of Lou Dobbs. His remarkable business acumen and talent in broadcasting were key factors in shaping cable news into a prosperous and impactful field. We are deeply appreciative of his significant accomplishments and extend our sincere sympathies to his family.”
