Throughout your journey, you encounter characters from the past and some new faces in the last refuge within this world of distorted memories. However, when you feel prepared to confront Mare’s games, you must traverse through a maze of treacherous rooms and formidable bosses. Mare allows you this challenge to feed on your despair, helplessness, and frustration at each setback. This challenging action rogue-lite serves as Mare’s ideal jail, where the game mechanics are not just technicalities but deliberate design choices by the primary antagonist.

It’s not just that I’m playing a video game; instead, I find myself immersed in a character who is ensnared within a distorted game, where everything seems like an odd reinterpretation of a game token. For example, red increases weapon damage, blue boosts dice damage, and so forth. Each time you acquire an artifact, you must decide where to place it for optimal chances of getting three in a row. Unlike abilities upgraded in the sanctuary, this artifact puzzle resets with every playthrough.
For each item, you receive a distinctive power. For instance, certain items cause poisoned foes to launch daggers, and others give your dash a powerful elemental blast. Some are more thrilling than others, but it doesn’t matter because often you select them just to match the color for completing a sequence of three. Besides these items, you have Fortune, a tiny dice companion. During battles, you can hurl Fortune and she will inflict damage equal to the number rolled. A six takes out smaller foes, but a one might be underwhelming. You must retrieve Fortune after rolling her; she doesn’t come back automatically in combat. Therefore, you need to be cautious about where you throw her. I discovered this the hard way when there is a Steam achievement for tossing Fortune off an edge.
