Over the past few years, game conservation has experienced significant growth, and the gaming movement known as Lost in Cult is contributing to these efforts by introducing a fresh line of tangible games. With an aim to stand out from the crowd, Lost in Cult is initiating its preservation project with three games that will redefine the concept of physical releases.
Here, it’s clear that three unique games – Immortality, The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow, and Thank Goodness You’re Here – are being offered with exclusive artwork. Each game comes with a special edition cover, an essay booklet, poster, and additional items. What stands out most is that these games are the latest versions, playable offline without requiring an internet connection. On a UK-based website, they are priced around $80 per game.
According to Lost in Cult’s statement, the experts from Does It Play have aided in examining the games, ensuring that each disk or cartridge contains the full game as it was initially released. In other words, there are no subsequent updates, downloads, or codes included within the package.
These restricted releases will commence shipping towards the end of 2025. The number of Immortality, The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow, and Thank Goodness You’re Here available on PS5 is limited to 1,500, 3,000, and 1,500 copies respectively. Meanwhile, the former two games will also be confined to 3,000 copies on Switch. For enthusiasts of traditional gaming, a tri-monthly schedule of PS5 and Switch game releases is planned, with the series kickoff slated for July.
In contrast to traditional physical releases for the upcoming Switch 2 gaming console, publishers and developers are choosing to distribute their games as Game Cards. Unlike conventional cartridges, these cards serve as authentication keys that allow Switch 2 owners to download the full game online. It’s important to note that these cards aren’t tied to a specific user account or console, enabling them to be resold in the future.
In addition, Limited Run Games unveiled their own series of physical Nintendo Switch games recently, while GOG launched a digital game preservation initiative last year. This effort resulted in the updating of timeless classics such as Dino Crisis and Breath of Fire 4 for contemporary PC platforms.
