‘Los Frikis,’ From Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Lands U.S. Distribution and Christmas Day Release (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie reviewer with a heart full of empathy and a soul that yearns for stories that resonate deeply, I must say that “Los Frikis” is one of those rare gems that leaves an indelible mark on your consciousness. Being half-Cuban myself, this film feels like a poignant reminder of my roots, albeit a painful and heartbreaking chapter in our history.

The Spanish film titled “Los Frikis,” produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, as well as directed by Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson, has secured U.S. distribution through Wayward/Range releasing. It is set to debut in various cities such as Los Angeles, New York, and Miami on December 25, 2024.

This film serves as the sequel to the critically praised drama “The Peanut Butter Falcon” (2019) directed by the duo Schwarz and Nilson, which gained them a DGA nomination for exceptional directorial debut in a feature film. The production is under the esteemed producers Lord and Miller, who won an Academy Award for “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”. It boasts a talented Latino cast that includes Adria Arjona (“Hit Man”), Héctor Medina (“Viva”), Jorge Perugorría, Luis Alberto García, and newcomer Eros de la Puente.

Based on real-life occurrences, this movie narrates the story of Gustavo, a young man living in 1990s Cuba, who admires his brother Paco and their punk bandmates known as “Frikis.” As Cuba grapples with oppressive regimes and crushing poverty, the Frikis take a drastic and courageous step: they intentionally contract HIV to secure shelter in government-run sanitariums.

In an exclusive interview with EbMaster, the Lord shared, “As a Cuban-American, I’ve encountered numerous tales that might disappear if they don’t find means to be shared through broader communities. It’s crucial for me and Chris to contribute in narrating these Latino stories under our Lord Miller label. The kindness and collaborative effort demonstrated by the entire cast, combined with guidance from additional Cuban writers, directors, artists, and friends scattered across the Cuban diaspora, played a significant role in crafting a heartfelt film that embodies the essence of Cuba, yet is intended for global audiences.

Schwartz stated, “Tyler and I carried a heavy burden as we aimed to portray accurately the real-life accounts of ‘Frikis’ who knowingly contracted HIV in the 90s on screen. This film was born from relationships we cultivated within the Cuban artistic community, and we waited until we had a skilled cast and production team ready to tackle such a complex narrative.

The film collective known as “Los Frikis” has been creating quite a stir in the festival scene. It recently garnered top honors at the Miami International Film Festival (winning the Marimbas Award) and the San Antonio Film Festival (Best Performance for Héctor Medina), as well as the Audience Award at the Nantucket Film Festival (receiving the Shine Global Award). To add to this, it also won Best Narrative Feature at the Middlebury Film Festival. As it continues its fall tour with screenings at the Hamptons, Heartland International, and Woodstock Film Festivals, anticipation for its official release is growing.
