Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 1 - Ben Walker Weighs In On The Galadriel And Elrond Feud

As a gamer with over a decade of experience immersed in the vast universe of Middle-earth, I must say that the Season 2 premiere of Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power has truly taken me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The tension between Galadriel, Elrond, and Gil-galad is palpable, and it’s reminiscent of those heated debates in multiplayer games when strategies clash and alliances are tested.

Caution: What follows reveals significant plot points from the first episode of Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, so tread carefully if you wish to avoid spoilers.

Oh dear, it appears there’s tension between parents in the second season opener of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power. The epic fantasy unfolds with Morfydd Clark as Galadriel and Robert Aramayo as Elrond rushing to Lindon to warn High King Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) that their acquaintance Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) is not who he claimed to be.

Elrond discovers that the person who designed their only chance of thwarting Sauron’s growing darkness had deceived them, but he is astonished when he learns that Halbrand was actually the dark sorcerer. Upon being informed of this truth by Galadriel, Elrond and Gil-galad are left in disbelief and shock. In an attempt to protect both Galadriel and Gil-galad from any evil influence that might be associated with the rings, Elrond secretly takes them away.

In just one scene, there’s an overwhelming amount of data for Gil-galad to grasp, and Benjamin Walker acknowledges that the High King finds himself in a tricky situation as he strives to rescue Middle-earth without further complicating the matter.

“He finds himself at a critical juncture, much like unearthing nuclear technology, where it seems capable of illuminating the entire northern hemisphere, or causing planetary destruction. I’m not entirely certain about [the rings] myself, but they seem to possess an unknown power that could put them in a delicate situation. However, it’s a preferable scenario compared to leaving Middle-earth to self-destruct,” Walker explained during a recent press event for Season 2, TopMob reported.

Although Gil-galad disapproves of Galadriel’s decision to let Sauron influence the creation of the rings, he can’t ignore their potency. When Cirdan (Ben Daniels) returns the rings Elrond had given him to Gil-galad and Galadriel, the High King promptly slips one on and recognizes their immense power.

“They’re determined to persist in their final desperate attempt, as this might be their only chance. They still hold on to a flicker of hope, but it’s barely visible at present. This uncertainty, which I find captivating as a Tolkien fan, is intriguing because we understand the rings and their effects, yet they are exploring the unknown powers, questioning, ‘What can this do?’ I find this exploration of the unknown quite fascinating.”

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 1 - Ben Walker Weighs In On The Galadriel And Elrond Feud

Elrond stared in dismay as three trusted companions donned rings that he believes are wicked (and we all know he’s correct!). Wearing these rings places Elrond in opposition to Galadriel and Gil-galad, yet Walker hints that Gil-galad may not align entirely with Galadriel despite accepting one of the rings.

“He’s clearly upset because neither of them are following his instructions. Instead, they seem to be arguing like immature children. However, it seems he’s taking a patient approach, acting as a wise parent might, encouraging them to learn and grow independently. Despite Galadriel being older than him, he’s expressing some frustration.”

By the end of the three-episode premiere, Gil-galad and Galadriel are still wearing the rings but are aware they have adverse effects. To help balance their judgment, Gil-galad puts Elrond in charge of Galadriel’s envoy to Eregion to check on Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards). That’s going to be a change in dynamic that will take some getting used to. Will Elrond and Galadriel find a way to get back on the same page before Sauron takes over Eregion? Only more Season 2 episodes will tell.
