As a seasoned movie buff who has witnessed the magic of Middle-earth unfold on the silver screen since the early 2000s, I must say that the news about “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” brings a twinkle of excitement to my eyes. Having grown up with Gandalf, Legolas, and Aragorn as companions in my cinematic journey, the prospect of revisiting their tales is a tantalizing one.
Ian McKellen sent “Lord of the Rings” fans into a tizzy earlier this year when he teased that the upcoming new movie, “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” would actually be two films. Not so fast. Philippa Boyens, the screenwriter who worked on Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, has confirmed to Empire magazine that “The Hunt for Gollum” is one movie. However, more live-action “Rings” movies could be on the way beyond that.
Boyens clarified it’s not two movies we’re making! It was a genuine confusion caused by us working on conceptually separate live-action films. One is titled ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ and details about the second one are yet to be revealed.
Boyens is penning “The Hunt for Gollum” alongside long-time “Rings” partner Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. She described the upcoming film as a rather intense tale that takes place after Bilbo’s birthday party but before they enter the Mines of Moria. It’s a fascinating piece of untold story from this remarkable creature’s point of view.
As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled about Andy Serkis, who brought Gollum to life through motion capture in Jackson’s trilogies, directing “The Hunt for Gollum.” Legendary cast members like Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) have shown interest in reprising their roles if the story fits well with their characters. As Boyens hints, it seems that the future “Rings” movies beyond “The Hunt for Gollum” might be centered around Gandalf.
Regarding the future, Boyens mentioned that we’re exploring several concepts, and more often than not, Gandalf is part of these ideas. This suggests that there’s a good chance Gandalf could appear in two upcoming live-action movies.
It was announced in May that ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Quest for Gollum’ will be produced by Peter Jackson, along with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. This upcoming movie is slated for a theater release in 2026 by Warner Bros. and New Line.
