Looks Like Destiny 2 Will Finally Take Guardians To Old Chicago

For quite some time now, enthusiasts of Destiny 2 have been eagerly speculating when the game would lead them to a location hinted at long before the first Destiny was even launched: Old Chicago. It appears that with the arrival of its newest expansion, Edge of Fate, we might finally get a glimpse of an answer, albeit a vague one: it seems imminent.

Initially, Echoes of Fate may appear to be subtly themed, given its backdrop on Kepler, a distant location in our solar system. However, it delves deeply into themes of time manipulation, peering into the past and providing glimpses of the future. The character Lodi, introduced in this expansion, provides the first clue about Chicago when he refers to a future encounter with Destiny’s player character, standing on the shores of Lake Michigan – the Great Lake where Chicago is situated.

Apart from that, there’s also the train. The initial scene of the campaign depicts Ikora Rey, a recurring character in the series, narrowly escaping being hit by a train that appears to have been teleported through time into Destiny 2’s distant future post-apocalyptic setting. Trains serve as a significant narrative element throughout the expansion, serving as a sort of reality-bending connector for various zones within the new location, Kepler, and becoming the iconic symbol of this expansion.

The appearance of that train car strongly resembles the iconic “El” train system in Chicago, an elevated railway that spans the city. Once you’re familiar with its characteristics, it becomes quite noticeable. If you closely examine the Edge of Fate key art, you can read the destination above the door, which indicates “Ravenswood,” a northern Chicago neighborhood.

However, if information is crystal clear in the later stages of the game, there’s no need for detective work. In one of the concluding missions, Ikora Rey from Destiny 2 hints at a possible destination, suggesting, “Perhaps we’re heading to Chicago soon.

For long-time Destiny players, Old Chicago holds significant interest. This location has been pondered, debated, and hinted at for numerous years. Bungie initially sparked the idea of visiting Old Chicago before the initial release of Destiny. Since then, allusions to this city have recurred frequently in both lore and narrative. Upon unveiling images of its 2022 expansion, The Witch Queen, players speculated that the location seen in its first trailer could be the marshy outskirts of Chicago.

The European Dead Zone (EDZ) and the Cosmodrome, two destinations in Destiny 2, offer unique experiences since they aren’t based on real-world locations. EDZ transports players to a ruined, fictional European town called Trostland, while the Cosmodrome is an imaginary airplane and spaceship cemetery and control center, presumably in Russia. These settings are exclusive to Destiny 2 as they don’t correspond to any specific place from our reality.

In my perspective, Chicago would undeniably feel familiar as it’s rooted in our world’s reality, making it the pioneer among other destroyed cities. Even though the ancient Earth cities were obliterated centuries before the Destiny 2 timeline, I believe that Chicago would retain its unique charm and character, much like we know it today. Witnessing this iconic city in its post-alien invasion ruins would be an intriguing experience in itself.

In simpler terms, this location would be the first American site where Destiny 2’s futuristic makeover is applied, offering an insight into how Bungie might evolve and transform the city over centuries – from rapid advancement to prolonged decay. Additionally, it raises intrigue about potential gameplay scenarios in the ruined city, as well as narrative elements surrounding any survivors struggling to exist there.

In Destiny 2’s campaign, Edge of Fate, there are suggestions that Chicago could become a crucial location as the story unfolds. Scenes from the expansion seem to travel back in time to Earth, specifically the 1960s, and one of these scenes shows a city skyline from afar. Interestingly, this city is where the Department of External Observation (DEO), an agency focused on potential alien contact and abduction, was situated in the past. If Chicago does indeed become a future destination, it’s quite possible that the DEO will also be part of the storyline.

It appears there’s a strong hint in Edge of Fate suggesting that Chicago might be the next major location. If true, this will mark the end of much anticipation and conjecture spanning over a decade – essentially the entire lifespan of Destiny.
