LoL Worlds already 2024’s most viewed esports event & it’s on track to break more records

As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but marvel at the sheer magnitude of League of Legends (LoL) Worlds 2024. The viewership numbers are staggering, and it’s still early in the tournament! To put it into perspective, I remember when a million concurrent viewers was a big deal for any esports event. Now, we’re talking about nearly three million just for the Swiss Stage!

Even though the second stage of LoL Worlds 2024 recently began, it has already surpassed all other esports events this year in terms of peak concurrent viewership, reaching a staggering 3 million viewers simultaneously.

Moreover, you should note that this is still considered the Swiss Stage, which is actually the second round at the World Championship. Typically, these rounds receive fewer viewers compared to the significant Final matches. However, in 2024, that trend will be broken.

In retrospect, at the Worlds 2023 tournament, it wasn’t until the Knockout stage that concurrent viewership began approaching 3 million, extending all the way through to the Quarterfinals and Semifinals, as reported by Esports Charts.

During the first day of the Swiss Stage at Worlds 2024, the peak viewership reached an impressive 2.8 million. If the trend continues, this year’s event could shatter some significant all-time viewing records, as it is already projected to surpass previous highs for 2024.

Remarkably, the Grand Final of Worlds 2023 reached over 6.4 million simultaneous viewers at its peak, an extraordinarily high figure that outshines the majority of broadcasts and solidifies its position as the most-watched esports event ever. Other games barely make a dent in comparison.

For example, in the latest BLAST Premier tournament, team G2 managed to secure the championship. However, this significant Counter-Strike event of 2024 reached a peak audience of 900,000 viewers, making it one of the largest CS events this year.

Despite being rather old, League of Legends remains the undisputed leader in global esports viewership, and that figure is expected to rise with the upcoming grand finale of the 2024 competitive season. However, it’s worth noting that this dominance might not primarily be attributed to the event itself, but rather to the co-streamers who contribute significantly to its popularity.

During the event, Caedrel, Ibai, and Baiano all drew a minimum of 100,000 viewers each, often overshadowing the primary Riot broadcast at specific moments. It seems that co-streaming has become the preferred method for viewers to engage with esports events.
