The preview for the 2025 Season 1 of League of Legends has been released, teeming with subtle hints and suggestions about upcoming events throughout the next twelve months.
Just as you’d anticipate at the start of a fresh year and new season, there was plenty to engage eager fans. The headline announcement is that Mel Medarda, who was previously leaked, has become the latest champion and will return home following the events depicted in Arcane.
This first season predominantly highlighted the Noxus empire, while offering a refreshed perspective on several classic champions such as Darius, Elise, and Katarina. Notably, Vladimir and Leblanc were given significant attention, receiving updated visual designs to coincide with the upcoming season.
Among fans, there was much debate about the looks of Vlad and LeBlanc, as they pondered the true motives behind these characters’ appearances. One enigmatic emblem even sparked speculation that Runeterra’s deadliest power might resurface once more.
A deal with the Darkin could be on the cards
People who have even a passing knowledge about the extensive tales surrounding League of Legends would recognize the Darkin. These divine warriors possess immense power and are often bent on wreaking havoc on the continent of Runeterra as a whole.
In the realm of League of Legends, I’ve come across some pretty formidable champions, but none quite compare to the might of the Darkin. I mean, there’s Aurelion Sol, who’s essentially a god, and Kindred, who embodies Death itself. But the Darkin? These guys are something else. There are four of them known so far: Aatrox, Varus, Naafiri, and Rhaast. They’re all stuck inside their weapons, yearning to reclaim their ascended forms. It’s a tough gig being trapped like that, but when they do break free, watch out!
In simpler terms, the emblem shown in the trailer strongly resembles the weapons they’re imprisoned within, leading many members of the League of Legends subreddit to believe that the Darkin might soon join the battle as a result of an evil alliance with Vladimir and Leblanc.
A comment speculates that the storyline for Riot could involve LeBlanc striking a bargain with a Darkin, aiming to control or subdue Mordekeiser.
A second individual chimed in, “It must be a Darkin… this could account for why Vladimir seems so terrified of it, given that his blood magic stems from the influence of the Darkin, doesn’t it?
Based on this theory, Riot could have two possible paths of action. They might decide to release one of the current Darkins from their imprisonment, or alternatively, they may opt to create a brand-new Darkin altogether.
As a fan, I’d find it most enticing for Riot to leverage established characters first. It’s plausible they’d steer clear of Aatrox in this scenario, given that his mission to bring about the end could clash harshly with LeBlanc and Vlad’s dynamics, making him a challenging “work partner”.
If someone wanted to utilize the power of a new Darkin, there are current characters within the Legends of Runeterra roster who might be suitable for this role. Although Riot’s Narrative Director for the Creative Expressions Team, Laurie Goulding, confirmed on Twitter in 2022 that the Darkin Saga is not considered canon, it could still make sense for any of these characters to be integrated into the lore at a later point.
Regardless, this is merely the beginning, and it’s only a matter of time before we understand the schemes of Vlad and LeBlanc more clearly. Excitingly, the new season kicks off on January 9, offering players an updated Noxus-themed Summoner’s Rift arena to explore.
