Logan Was to Begin with a Brutal Scene That Would Set a Different Tone for the Wolverine Movie with Hugh Jackman

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of comic book movie-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that Logan was a breath of fresh air in the superhero genre. The decision to forego the initial scene depicting the demise of the X-Men was a stroke of genius by director James Mangold.

Logan represents a revolutionary take on the superhero genre that left audiences spellbound. It offered an unprecedented perspective of the “comic book universe” and served as Hugh Jackman‘s emotional farewell to his beloved character, Wolverine – at least temporarily, since he reprised his iconic role in Deadpool & Wolverine, a film currently gracing theater screens.

Maybe some people aren’t aware that the director initially intended to give this movie a unique tone, but ultimately chose not to due to concerns that it might transform into an X-Men storyline, as he aimed to keep the focus on Logan and Professor Charles Xavier alone.

What might have caused this situation? The filmmaker initially planned to depict the destruction of the X-Men at the movie’s start, but instead chose to convey that incident implicitly, focusing mainly on Wolverine’s narrative and his personal struggles following the event.

James Mangold told the story in 2017 during an interview with IGN.

Initially, I penned an introduction that incorporated that specific sequence. To be clear, this wasn’t a figurative death; it was literal. However, we decided against using it not because we were considerate of other films, but rather because it fundamentally transformed the movie. It shifted the focus from Logan and Charles to the X-Men, making the film about them instead.

Furthermore, upon reading the script’s introduction in that manner, it transitioned from being focused on one tragedy to instead highlighting another, with the previous tragedy serving more as a lingering specter rather than a central concern for the characters.

According to Mangold, it’s likely that the movie Logan might have missed out on some impact with such a scene. And considering how the film performed exceptionally well by solely focusing on Wolverine, portrayed by Hugh Jackman, this decision may have been justified.
