As an ardent cinephile who has traversed the global cinematic landscape for decades, I find myself captivated by the intriguing teaser of “Moon,” a film that promises to delve into the complexities of sisterhood and confinement, directed by the prodigious Kurdwin Ayub.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of catching a glimpse of the captivating teaser for the upcoming film titled “Moon” (Mond). This intriguing preview marks its global debut on August 11, gracing the International Competition section at the esteemed Locarno Film Festival. Excitingly, Bendita Film Sales has recently joined the production team to manage the worldwide sales rights for this anticipated film.
The movie, titled “Sonne,” was both penned and helmed by Kurdwin Ayub. This marks his debut as a director in the realm of fiction features, with the premiere of this film taking place at the 2022 Berlinale during the Encounters competition. Remarkably, it bagged the award for the best first feature.
Born in Iraq and currently residing in Vienna, Ayub was also recognized with a nomination for the European Discovery Award during the 35th European Film Awards for her film “Sonne.” This movie went on to win the award for Best Austrian Film at Viennale. Furthermore, Ayub’s feature documentary “Paradise! Paradise!” received the accolade for best cinematography at Diagonale – Festival of Austrian Film.
In the movie “Moon,” Sarah, a previous martial arts champion, departs Austria to instruct three wealthy Jordanian sisters in combat skills. At first glance, this appears to be an ideal job; however, it quickly turns disquieting as the young ladies are isolated from the world and monitored at all times. It seems that their interest in sports is minimal. One might wonder, then, why Sarah was employed for this position?
In the statement, Ayub expressed: “Regardless of their origin, it’s about the bond between sisters. And it pertains to cages, whether they’re distant or near – those we long to escape from, and those we yearn to revisit.”
The film stars Florentina Holzinger, Andria Tayeh, Celina Antwan and Nagham Abu Baker.
The film titled “Moon” was created by the contentious director Ulrich Seidl for Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion, with backing from both the Austrian Film Institute and Filmfonds Vienna. Additionally, ORF Film and Fernseh-Abkommen collaborated in its production. ZDF/ARTE and ZDF/Das kleine Fernsehspiel are also co-producers on this project, along with Essential Films.
The film shot from April until August 2023 in Jordan and Austria.
The cinematographer is Klemens Hufnagl and the editor is Roland Stöttinger.
