Lizzo to Play Rosetta Tharpe in Biopic for Amazon MGM Studios

In the forthcoming movie “Rosetta,” produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Lizzo is set to portray the groundbreaking musician, Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

Based on the works of writers Natalie Chaidez (“The Flight Attendant”) and Kwynn Perry (“Tigerbelles”), “Rosetta” will portray the genuine account of Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s life and her journey to becoming the matriarch of Rock & Roll. Lizzo, along with Kevin Beisler, Nina Yang Bongiovi from Significant Productions, and Forest Whitaker, are set to produce this film. The project is at present being developed.

4-time Grammy winner Lizzo is renowned for achieving two number one hits on the Hot 100 chart with “Truth Hurts” and “About Damn Time.” Notably, she became the first black woman to win the record of the year category at the Grammy Awards since 1994. In 2022, she headlined the HBO special “Lizzo: Live in Concert,” produced and starred in the reality TV show “Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls,” and was the central figure in the documentary “Love, Lizzo” which premiered on Max in 2022.

Tharpe hasn’t made her first appearance on the big screen; rather, she was portrayed by Yola in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” (2022), alongside Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. Although Tharpe passed away in 1973, her music remains popular and has been featured in numerous films and series lately, with appearances in “A League of Their Own,” “Atlanta,” “Death on the Nile,” “I Know This Much Is True,” and “Elvis & Nixon.

Lizzo is managed by UTA, Full Stop Management, and Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks. Meanwhile, Chaidez and Perry are both represented by CAA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer, along with other associated firms.

Deadline first reported news of the developing project.
