Liza Minnelli Opens Up in First Trailer for Documentary ‘Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As I sit here, captivated by the vibrant energy that emanates from the trailer of “Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story,” I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of admiration for the legendary Liza Minnelli. Her life, a whirlwind of glitz, glamour, and raw emotion, is a testament to the indomitable spirit that resides within each of us.

I’m thrilled to share that the initial teaser and artwork for the upcoming Liza Minnelli documentary, titled “Liza: An Authentically Astounding True Tale,” have been unveiled!

The artwork on the poster showcases a youthful depiction of Minnelli, sporting her iconic pixie cut and long lashes, created by artist Kii Arens, featuring colors such as red, white, light blue, and black.

The trailer opens with Minnelli sitting in a chair and singing a snippet – “Gather around, I have a story to tell” – of a song from “Cabaret.” It shows footage of the EGOT winner throughout her more than 50-year career, as well as interviews with her sister Lorna Luft, the late Chita Rivera, Michael Feinstein and Darren Criss. Ben Vereen is shown tearing up talking about the legendary entertainer and daughter of Hollywood royalty, Judy Garland and Vincent Minnelli.

Mia Farrow talks about being at Minnelli and David Guest’s wedding. “Oh, my god,” she exclaims.

At the close of the trailer, Minnelli can be heard conversing with the camera, expressing her gratitude: “What a fortunate soul I am to have experienced all the hardships I’ve faced, as they’ve equipped me for the journey ahead.

Under the guidance of director Bruce David Klein, this film made its debut at this year’s Tribeca Festival, and was also showcased at the Hamptons Film Festival, the Provincetown Film Festival, and the NewFest LGBTQ+ Film Festival. This production is a joint effort by Atlas Media Corp, working alongside Zietgeist Films and Kino Lorber.

Minnelli expressed excitement about this documentary as it reveals the journey of how my creativity blossomed, supported by my amazing friends, mentors, and colleagues. Bruce and his team delved profoundly into my connections with the individuals who essentially shaped me, and I can’t wait for cinema-goers to live that experience!

The doc also includes never-before-seen footage of Minnelli during her 1970s European tour. “As soon as we pressed play on the first reel of footage, we were blown away,” Klein said. “Right in front of us was this beautiful, vulnerable superstar of stage and screen at the height of her powers. She was literally the ‘it’ girl of the world at that time. Even the personal scenes of her just hanging out were fascinating and revealing. Our team really got a feel for who she was and what drove her.”

The captivating, authentic tale titled ‘Liza: A Remarkable Real Story’ will debut on January 24, 2025 at IFC Center in New York City. On January 31, it will be screened at Laemmle’s Royal in Los Angeles and Town Center in Encino, California. Following this, a nationwide release will follow.
