Liverpool and Portugal footballer Diogo Jota dies aged 28 in car crash

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Spain. He was 28 years old.

On a fateful night in Zamora, Spain, I found myself on a journey alongside my younger brother, André Silva. Unfortunately, as we traveled, our car veered off the road and ignited into flames. Tragically, this accident took both our lives, happening just after midnight on a Thursday.

As reported by the BBC, Spanish authorities stated that the driver’s Lamborghini experienced a tire burst during an overtaking maneuver against another vehicle.

Silva, aged 26, was additionally a professional soccer player, representing the Portuguese team Penafiel in the second tier.

Not long ago, Jota tied the knot with his long-time companion, Rute Cardoso, who is the mother of his three kids. They exchanged vows on June 22, and he had recently shared pictures from their wedding barely a few days prior to the accident.

Jota’s football career

Since his arrival at Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, the Portuguese player has been an integral member of the team. He netted more than 50 goals for the club and contributed significantly to their triumph in the 2024/25 Premier League.

As a proud member of the Portuguese national team, I’ve been a regular fixture, even finding the back of the net during our triumphant UEFA Nations League final against Spain this past summer.

Prior to joining Liverpool, Jota had stints with Paços de Ferreira, Atlético Madrid, FC Porto, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Renowned for his swift maneuvers, precise shooting, and tireless effort, he built a name as one of Europe‘s smartest and most effective attackers.
