Brook Lapping is creating a brand-new documentary series delving into the tale behind the historic Live Aid concerts, an unprecedented worldwide music event that’s now marking its 40th anniversary.
The upcoming documentary series, set to be aired on BBC and CNN, will explore the significant influence that concerts held between Live Aid in 1985 and Live 8 in 2005 had on music, politics, and global consciousness. This series will include exclusive interviews with notable figures such as Bob Geldof, Bono, Sting, U.S. President George Bush, Nigerian President Obasanjo, and Birhan Woldu. The series aims to shed light on the lasting impact of these events over a span of twenty years.
The production companies behind this project are Brook Lapping, a division of Zinc Media, along with Ronachan Films. They’re working together with BBC and CNN Originals for co-production. The series will be led by Tom Pollard and will be broadcasted in two different versions: on the BBC as a three-part series titled “Live Aid at 40,” while on CNN, it will air as a four-episode show called “Live Aid: When Rock ‘n’ Roll Conquered the World.
Originating from the minds of Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, the epic Live Aid Concert, held in 1985 at Wembley and spanning an astonishing 16 hours, showcased a star-studded roster of the world’s most renowned musicians such as David Bowie, Madonna, Mick Jagger, Patti LaBelle, Phil Collins, Queen, Spandau Ballet, Sade, Sting, Status Quo, Tina Turner, and U2. This global broadcast was beheld by an estimated two billion viewers across over 100 nations, contributing significantly to the collection of billions in funds worldwide. The forthcoming series will explore the contentious tales surrounding this legendary event and its lasting impact in Britain, the United States, and Africa.
Life Aid: 40th Anniversary Edition” features an extended 6.5-hour compilation of performances from London and Philadelphia concerts, along with behind-the-scenes footage. This includes interviews with musicians like Bono, Brian May, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Howard Jones, Roger Daltrey, Spandau Ballet, Sting, The Style Council, as well as a transatlantic chat with Phil Collins. Additionally, it pays tribute to Ethiopian politicians Dawit Giorgis and Berhane Deressa who were instrumental in the relief efforts.
Tanya Shaw, executive producer, highlighted Brook Lapping’s significant influence in storytelling and valuable connections with influential political figures and celebrities as key factors in securing exclusive interviews with the main players involved in Live Aid. Our team put in a great deal of effort to compile unique interviews and behind-the-scenes information, unearthing previously untold tales about this event that significantly impacted global aid efforts. Shaw added that our work provides a new perspective on how the event affected music and politics over time,” said Tanya Shaw.
Emma Hindley, who oversees programming for “Live Aid at 40” at BBC, stated that the show will offer viewers a captivating and enjoyable journey as they explore the past four decades following the historic live concert broadcast on television.
